When I bought my car, the full service history and spare keys had disappeared at the auction - not an uncommon occurence I am told. I am left with just one key. I enquired at my local dealer about obtaining another key. The figure quoted for the key and programming was £150.

Is this really how much I should pay, or is there an alternative and reliable source ?

I am told to avoid the keys which appear very cheaply on eBay.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

That is the going rate, and you are correct in that the ebay keys are of no use to you as they cannot be reprogrammed.

No, not overly concerned. The local dealer told me it happens to them also !

In any case, no point in worrying about something I can do little about.

I have consulted a couple of locksmiths from the ALA (Auto Locksmiths Ass.) and they both confirm that they can not program keys for Mercedes, and until such time as they get the software it is a task for Main Dealers only.

In consolation, one of them points out at least it is not as bad as the Nissan X-trail, for which Main Dealer charges £270 !

BMW and MB are the only 2 firms where keys cannot be copied
