I would try flushing the engine cooling system out with a hose and keep on flushing til its clear. Reverse flush it too. Sounds like there is gunk in the system or the gaskets away like you think. Also - get a new thermostat and try that if you haven't already.

Cylinder head gasket job. (Don't forget to put the thermostat back, or better still, replace it).

e200 head gasket

Hi my E200 1999, temeprature gauge was always high ,according to the merc dealer at the time he said dont worry the fan will engage and cool the engine. So in the que up to Sterling castle, Scotland the temp gauge was way up there. I stoped phoned the garage and they said dont worry the fan will engage. EHHH wot, its hasnt!! Dont worry they are known for it.

Anyway at the next service everything was ok, the fan worked and the engine was fine. Two weeks later the head gasket went. Oh dear I didnt really swear, well not much. I have a friend with a car sales outfit and his mechanic replaced the gasket at trade price I was made up. Then I started to hear very faint rattling noises, which gradually got laouder. I took the car to a specialist engine repair service ERS at Burscough, Lancashire. Straight away he drove the car and told me that two pistons had warped. And the job plus more had to be done again. In excess of £1200 quid. A well respected trustable man. when garages in the area have problems with engines they all send them to himto sortout.

Anyway nearly there now! because of the bad info from mercs I had two wopping great bills. If you read the Parkers guide to pricing cars, it say something like 'watch the e200, well known for head gasket failure'. The moral- be carefull.
