- 2005 CLK200 coupe (now gone) 2011 R230 SL350 2014 C220 estate
My name is Alastair and I am a new member to the forum based in west central Scotland.
My father (and indeed his father before, although I do not recall these times) always had Mercs - I remember a series of pale yellow 280E's in the 70's and early 80's bought thru' Gene Herrison the MB dealer on Great Western Road in Glasgow at that time.
He moved on to S classes in the late 80's and 90's and had a series of blue 300SE's and finally E class estates.
Back in the early 80's he bought a cream 200TE (manual!) from a friend for my mother, followed a little later by another used 200TE.
Latterly he bought a couple of vehicles from Germany back in the days of grey/ parallel imports - I think a 320 diesel estate for him and a 230 CLK coupe for my mother which they ran for many years.
He is sadly no longer with us and my mother now runs a very nice automatic Polo SEL.
I have come to MB from the Porsche side of Stuttgart having had a very cheap 10 year old 996 coupe with only 30k miles on it followed by a 987 Cayman S - both weekend cars with light mileage. I also bought a barn-find 1982 911SC on eBay around 10 years ago and spent 5 years rebuilding it from the ground up. However, I found the Porsche club fraternity rather distasteful and withdrew from the club after various shenanigans last year.
Around that time I spotted a 2005 W209 200 CLK with only 5,900 miles on it for sale on the Collecting Cars site and ended up buying it as a cheap mile-mucher. I had just sold my company car and never cease to be amazed at the depreciation on new modern vehicles so was on the lookout for a reasonably-priced quality car.
We have now covered some 30,000 miles over the past year and a bit, during which my appreciation for things Mercedes has been stimulated.
Consequently, I sold my wife's nearly new VW Golf estate late last year (actually for a profit attributable to the scarcity of used cars due to Covid) and purchased a 30k mile C220 estate which she says is the best car she has ever had.
Having got out of Porsches last year and having racked up many miles in my modest daily driver, I wanted a bit of quality as a weekend special for summer highdays & holidays and have recently purchased a January 2012 registered (perhaps one of the last?) R230 SL350 with 35k miles. 3 or 4 months in, there have been some teething troubles, but now getting to enjoy it in this glorious weather.
Apologies for the long epistle, but having been lurking here for a while, I thought I would introduce myself.
