Biggest bills here from likely culprits which are all fixable:
- Oil cooler seal leaks. Around £800-1000 depending if you have a new swirl flap motor and new oil cooler (both recommended). Check for oil leak from hard to identify origin, possibly down back of engine.
- Aircon not working, most likely due to condenser corrosion and stone chip damage causing leaking gas.
- Gearbox service every 3 years/36k(ish), I think it is on the 7G boxes (if you have 7G and not 7G+)
- and by far the biggest, rust on the inside of the rear subframe. Get this crawled over with a fine tooth comb, torches, mirrors and inspection cameras.

All of these issues can be found on the forum in more detail.
Welcome

Welcome Richard, Good luck with the car. Main issue with the C is the rear subframe. on the OM642 is the oil cooler seals which were updated around 2010 so you may be in or out.

Good luck with the purchase, the engine is tried and tested. 350s are rarer and usually owned by those more into cars.

Whip the engine cover off and check the orange turbo seal for any oily deposits as well as the crankcase ventilation. The crank vent pipe is on its 4th revision IIRC.

MercServe are good for independent specialists.

When I was at Hartwell Motor Contacts I used to business with some Gypsies from Canvey Island, they used to buy a lot of Vans from me. :)

They didn't want anything to do with VAT and they insisted on paying cash. It took me a long time to convince them that I couldn't exclude them from VAT and that I just didn't want cash. Cash was a pain in the ar$e, they had to count it, I had to count it, our accounts had to count it and then the Bank wanted to charge us to count it plus it was not a good thing for me to be handling in my position. The upside was that they were good buyers and when we got them straightened out they were good to deal with :)

Probably alot of fake notes in there, and they would have come back to rob you and who knows where gypsies get that amount of cash from.

Sorry for being to so anti Gypo.

There are a fair few of these Romi type ladies here in Nottingham, they stand out a mile - always wearing these long flowing dresses, with unusual coloured tops - shop keepers have nothing good to say about them and they are sly pick pockets at the local market. They used a cutter to cut the handles on mums handbag, but my mum wollaped them.

Sly effers, hate them

Well done your Mum :)

I am sure that the Gypsies that I used to deal with were not fine upstanding Christians but they were OK to deal with and came up with the right sort of money. They did finally come up with Bankers Drafts that went through the system OK. :)

My job as Fleet Disposals Manager was to liquidate the ex Contract Hire fleet at the most beneficial level to the company and it just happened that they came up with the right money. Liking them was not high on my list of priorities :)

Collected the car from Canvey Island yesterday

I sill have my wallet!

Tube was suspended as usual and the cab from Kings Cross to Liverpool Street was £20.00 - £10 a mile!

Car drove back beautifully and averaged 45.8 to the gallon although I was not hanging about

The advertised full service history was strangely absent and it has one or two cosmetic issues which I can fix

Any thoughts on the effect of the value of this on a 4k car?

Overall pleased with the car, lots of power and very smooth and quiet compared to my 3 series

Under the bonnet looks very clean, dry and tidy

I will start a project thread later after the clean up has begun

As they say in the movies what a ride!

Good to hear you’re happy with it.

The impact to value will differ from person to person but, I would always say get the cosmetics done, keep it clean and at least externally it will look like a well maintained example. Further down the line if you do sell then it’s easier to sell too.
