Hi everyone,

I am new to ths forum having bought an E320 CDi estate a few mounths ago - and I love it.

I am looking for a good independent garage in the south liverpool area to service and work on my car. (I'm having a little trouble with a flat battery at the moment and it doesn't look like the battery.)

I would be greatful for any input wrt garages.

Cheers

I've had the battery run flat on me a couple of times recently. The first over Christmas when I think one of the internal lights had been left on by mistake. The next was one day this week when the car had not been used for a couple of days.

There seems to be a bit of confusion amongst the people I have taken it to which ranges from all ok, through faulty battery to weak altenator.

I'd just like someone trustworthy to look at it.

Ian, the average battery tester used by most places are useless and out of date, the alternator will either work or it will not, if it was faulty you would have the lamp in the cluster indicating that there was a fault with it.

One of the snags in testing batteries is that you have to start the car in order to drive to the testing station, this can mask such things as a duff high ressistance cell, the most common reason for it to fail. Lucas and Bosch testing stations are equiped with the gear to test, most others are not, and they have not got a clue what they are talking about.

modern batteries last 4-5 years max, if your battery is this old, just change it to save all of the agro, a new one will transform many functions on the car.

Only buy a Bosch,Lucas,Banner,Exide or Varta and you will not go wrong, do not be told that the cheap battery that the shop tries to sell you is made by one of the obove Companies they are not.

Hope this helps.

Malcolm,

Just a quick note to thank you for your input.

I managed to track down a new battery (Bosch Silver) which was fitted last night and so far so good. Just a quick flash of a message on the dash saying ABS needs to be reset, visit dealer, which has now dissapeared so I assume it has reset automatically.

Thanks again

ps: Any ideas on tyre choice for the E Class estate?

Vredestein Ultracs suit the estate and are quieter than the stock tyre and grip very well. Mine are 225/55 16 W94s and were £87 fitted each.

They have the rim protector moulding which is useful for when the wife parks the car....
