E350 v6 cdi 2011
Hi guys I have come across this page and decided to join. I purchased a e350 v6 cdi 2011 at the start of the year and I have really enjoyed it. Recently my drivers dipped light went out so I replaced the bulb nothing happened. So I decided to use the left hand side bulb just to see if that may work and again nothing. In between this the light did come on on the original bulb for around 10 seconds and hasn’t been on since. I did some re search and purchased a headlight control modual to see if that was the issue but again nothing:(. I have had a scanner put onto the car and have been told there is no voltage going to it now the guy who did this didn’t really seem to care or know what he was doing has anyone els had this issue and will I be looking into getting a new light anything is a big help thanks guys

Hello and Welcome,

Do you have bi-xenon headlights? Ballast failed?

Hi Maxamo,
I hope I can help, I’d run through a logical elimination process.

1. Is the switch working, I’d say yes as the other one is working and it’s on the same circuit and that would also apply to the fuse.

2.The ballast unit would be my next place to look, it is basically an inline resistor that serves two purposes it helps with the initial arc to get the hid working and also limits the current that the lamp can pull to prevent it burning out.
So you have said you have replaced it, it is critical that it’s replaced with the correct ballast/hid controller. I would be checking that there was 12v going on the input side and 12v coming out.

3. If there isn’t any voltage on the input, then look closely at the wiring, is there any corrosion on the earth/negative? Or any of the wires for that matter.

4.Does the loom look in good condition? Ie not pinched or squashed?

5.Check your common earth point for corrosion this location will differ on each vehicle it’s usually under the bonnet near the front top strut mounts.

Ballast units are a common failure. It's a metal box screwed to the underside of the headlamp. It's common for condensation to form inside the lamp. It condenses back into water and runs to the lowest point of the lamp, the ballast unit. It gets inside and damages the sensitive electrics. If you investigate and find water damage I'd recommend you don't just fit a new unit before investigating the water ingress. It'll fail again in short order if water is getting in.

I’d also unwrap that black electrical tape, it’s possible someone has done a poor join/splice on one of the cores.
On the brown and green cores, that is a diy wiring attempt.
