New Mercedes C Class Wing Mirror Wind Noise

Hello!
I have just purchased by first MB and had opted for the new C Class SE CDI 4 door. I have been really impressed with the general build and distinct lack of road noise........well this was until i was on the motorway traveling at about 80 mph. I am experiencing a wind noise that I originally thought could be the door seals, I went to my dealer and before he got into the car he said it may be due to the large wing mirrors which I must admit i did not really notice before purchasing! We went for a short motorway drive and he too could hear the noise and repeated his initial thoughts! He did kindly let me drive another C Class which also had these mirrors and the same problem became apparent! Has anybody else experienced this ?

Thanks John

Hello John and welcome to the forum.

Its the first time that mirror noise has come up,, even on road test this has not been mentioned.

See what others think

Mine too

I have recently bought a 08 C-180 and I have also noticed wind noise but only from the passenger side and it appears to be at the same speed that John is experiencing the problem.

Good few complaints about this noise on the NA forums -same answer from dealers too, apparently. I don't get any undue noise from my 08, so find it hard to believe it is the mirrors. Surely with all that claimed testing, someone would have noticed this before it hit production.

The outer door seals do look as if they need perfect alignment to seal effectively though, since they only press lightly against the outside of the bodywork and aren't compressed when you shut the door. Hard to pinpoint however.

Still, MB did change the mirrors for 09, so maybe a small accumulation of alignment errors during production creates the noise on some cars?

Hope you manage to get it resolved

Hi Keith,

As I am new to Forums could you direct me to the NA Forums? My car is a 58 registration and am devastated that I have this noise problem in such a loverly car! My last car was a Vauxhall Vectra! and did not have any issues:rolleyes:. Any info you have on the mirror change for 09 would be really helpful?

Thanks John

Hi John

These are the 2 forums on which I saw the mirror remarks. They're not just for NA, but 85% of members seem to be.

www.MBworld.org

www.Benzworld.org

Both have a specific forum for the W204 - don't go on a general site.

Search for mirrors or similar. You'll have join to search though. There's a thread about the new mirrors on one of them right now, which is dissolving into a argument about wind noise.

Apart from mirror noise, what else? I am looking to buy. Heck, if you stick a small projectile on the front of the mirror, to alter the airflow, it will probably disappear.the noise. Then if it does, paint it the same color as thecar, and nobody will notice.

I have two friends with them and they love them, and have had no faults or problems. I understand that the mirrors have been changed now on the latest models

It was an observation I made when the new C-Class came out, I thought "What massive wing mirrors". Don't see why they need to be so big.

Just a quick update! I have been on a number of Forums now and there are mixed responses to the wind noise problem. This problem has really spoilt my enjoyment on what is fundamentally a good car! Unfortunately I average 60,000 miles a year and this issue is unacceptable so back on the market shortly for a new car especially after the response below!

Dear Mr Holley

Mercedes-Benz Model: C-Class C 200 CDI
Chassis No: xxxxxxxx
Registration: FG58

Thank you for your most recent e-mail concerning the wind noise that you are experiencing when driving over sixtyfive miles-an-hour.

We have been informed by our Technical Support Department that changes and modifications are an ongoing process throughout the production life of any model, and there was a model change from August 2008 production of the C-Class range when new smaller wing mirrors were introduced.

As far as we are aware there are no plans to recall earlier produced vehicles to fit these smaller mirrors, and any retrofit request by a customer would be at their own expense.

Thank you for contacting the Mercedes-Benz Customer Assistance Center with your enquiry.

Yours sincerely

Michael Bacon

So they have admitted that there is a problem, but want to do nothing to help you, and a good customer at that.

I am lost for words sometimes:(
