Hi all, I've just taken ownership of my first Mercedes and was hoping to gat some advise from you experts. Its a 1995 E220 CE, 140k miles on the clock, fsh etc. and in great condition.

(Excuse me if some of these questions seem a little basic!)

1). What bhp is this model?
2). What sort of fuel economy can I expect (mpg etc)?
3). What's the difference between the E and S gearbox settings, can you recommend which to use?
4). Can you recommend how to keep the car as best possible, when to service, change oil etc.
5). In the morning when I start her up and put in reverse if tends to cut out if I apply accelerator?
6). Also slight creaking when going over speed bumps, sounds like creaking spring?

Any other general advise would be much appreciated, anything you might think of. Thanks all!

Er... I should know this

2). What sort of fuel economy can I expect (mpg etc)?

22-32 mpg?

3). What's the difference between the E and S gearbox settings, can you recommend which to use?

In S it holds onto gears longer & revs more. Leave it in S

4). Can you recommend how to keep the car as best possible, when to service, change oil etc.

Service interval is 9000 miles and it goes A service (oil change), B service (oil change, inspection & etc), A service, etc

I'd do an immediate A service & inspection, unless you've got some documentary evidence of it having been serviced recently. If you think it hasn't been serviced, or are not sure, then assume it hasn't been

5). In the morning when I start her up and put in reverse if tends to cut out if I apply accelerator?

Not a petrol expert, sorry

6). Also slight creaking when going over speed bumps, sounds like creaking spring?

Front antiroll bar bushes shagged. Or broken front springs. Or worn front balljoints

Any other general advise would be much appreciated, anything you might think of. Thanks all!

Here we go. Instant W124 pick-me-up:

* change the gearbox fluid & filter right away unless it's got full Mercedes history
* do the antiroll bar bushes right away
* put some decent tyres on it and check the tracking
* buy a touch-up stick from the dealer & touch up all the stone chips
* clean the sunroof tracks & make sure the sunroof drain pipes aren't blocked
* unblock the drains at each end of the windscreen (they're in the engine compartment under the gutter under the screen)
* replace the wiper blades
* unblock the wiper jets (they're always blocked)
* replace the rear sidelight bulbs as they darken with age
* replace the serpentine belt & keep the old one for emergencies

Welcome.
Also, get a hose and your fingers in behind the edges of all the wheel arches and get rid of all the crud likely gathered there. Waxoyl afterwards.
Lubricate your front anti-roll bar bushes (4) with some brake fluid (don't get it on any paintwork!) & see if your creaking goes away. You'll then know whether it's these or the suspension balljoints - probably is the former though.
Additionally I would run a bottle of injector cleaner through a couple of tankfuls of fuel - follow the directions.
Good luck.
