Hi all, so I have purchased a 2019 Mercedes C Class 220 Sport diesel automatic saloon W205 which is a facelift version, my first ever Mercedes. After driving a Jaguar X-type 2.0 diesel manual for the past 10 years plus, I am a bit disappointed, I find I have no passion for this Mercedes like I did for the Jaguar, what am I not seeing. I find driving the automatic is boring and even more so with cruise control the only thing I have left for me to do is steer the car along the road. I think because I owned the Jaguar for so long and did most of the servicing myself I got to know a lot about the car. This Mercedes I know nothing about it and I am struggling to find a useful manual to give guidance about servicing and repair. I did download a manual from eManual but I did not like the virtual desktop and it is not easy to navigate. I would be very grateful if someone could point me in the right direction of a manual that would provide good information so that I can service and repair my Mercedes myself, if I have to put it into a Mercedes garage or any garage for servicing I will not be owning my Mercedes for very long.

Hello and welcome. It can often be quite a shock moving from one marque to another especially when you know so much about your old car. However, the X type was basically a Ford Mondeo from the end of the 20th Century so a recent Mercedes ought to be far superior in many ways.

Give the automatic some time - they can be just a much fun as a manual once you get used to them and know how to control the gears from the throttle and you don't have to use cruise control!

A lot of people on here do their own servicing although it is a complex car and there may be times when it needs to be plugged into a Mercedes computer so it will be worth finding a reputable Independent near you for those occasions. Where are you based?

Finally, I hope you do a high mileage. Modern Euro 6 diesels don't work well with a lot of short journeys because the emission control systems then get bunged up with crystals from the AdBlue and cause very expensive repairs. That's not a problem you would have had with your Jaguar.

An X-Type is a Mondeo???? Yes 20% of the X-Type uses Mondeo parts, hardly a Mondeo. We could say the same about newer Mercedes, Audi's, BMW's, not to mention Chevrolet, Fords and all the old school cars Like Rolls Royce, Morris, Triumph, you name it they have been using one and anothers parts. Lotus is another example, its a Ford in a mini skirt. even Scimitars use parts that other parts can not reach....... (where have I heard that line before) :D
It's got worse now, Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Nissan, and all the clumsy looking new SUV are fairly identical shells with different grilles and lights.
But I must say, the X-Type is a really good car, been there, though like any good car, they are high maintenance. I sold my X-Type and bought an 05 E240, 2 totally different cars, my son's said, 'I have gone from a sports car to a pipe and slippers car' Darn cheek!! I had my e-class for 6 months and traded it for the SL55

@Heliman welcome.
A different brand takes a bit of getting used to, I started off in Triumph's, then to American cars, then Jags, BMW's and Audi, then to a Mercedes 450se, I found this no comparison to the XJ's, in fact, I found the 450 boring and slow. I sold it eventually and went back to Jag after 6 years. Had the Jag for a short time and got rid of it for a Mercedes 350SL. After having the Mercedes you learn more and more about them, and you start to realise just how nice they are compared to other brands.
Your X-Type would compare to an E-Class Mercedes, a bit more up market, but I'm talking s211 type from 2001 to 2009 ;)

OP, glad you didn't buy an SLK, now that is a boring car! They never go wrong, never need servicing, nothing breaks and gone on for ever and ever........No, the bit about no servicing isn't true

Welcome :)

I bet after a year in an auto you wouldn't dream of going back to a manual.

Welcome, as above autos are addictive you won’t regret buying one it’s a car buyers coming of age I’ve never met anyone who regretted it

As regards maintenance and fault finding these cars are complex so most do the basic servicing themselves and find a local MB Independent to do the rest me included. It’s well worth buying an iCarsoft code reader for diagnostics most on here (including myself) buy from UK Parts Direct

Good luck with the car always good advice available from forum members and supporters

Welcome.

Autos are different and relaxing but, the modern autos are very slick unlike the really basic ones we used to see donkeys years ago. That said my 4spd 94’ UK Supra, and 5spd Volvo work great and I prefer them to the 7spd in my Mercs. I wasn’t overwhelmed by the 9spd in the Merc SL500 I tried but, MB boxes work well enough on the whole and are generally trouble free. The zf modern 8spd auto I’m other marques is nice and a gem coupled to a punchy engine.

Sad to say these modern cars are far from diy friendly. If you like tinkering to any extent, a decent scan tool and a thirst to understand the complex workings of the systems is a must. Best to always use one of recommended specialists for service/repairs even if you have to travel to ensure the smoothest experience.

That said, I hope you enjoy your car and that it serves you well for the time you own it. Regardless if you keep it or, sell it, be sure to stick around as it’s very nice forum and some members have very interesting MBs and non MBs.

Welcome OP.
Didnyou actually test drive the bar before you purchased it.
It will either grow on you or get rid otherwise you will be crying for a long time.
