Just see a Telegraph article that the GB identifier is going to become UK to be more inclusive of Northern Ireland . Not sure if this will impact onto EU area driving . Either way don’t buy new plates until it’s become clear .

If you have plain plates then you'll need one of them big black and white (GB) stickers on your boot. EU requires that the car shows, in an EU acceptable manner, which country it's from. Also meaning that the EU would need to accept the change from GB to UK it's not something UK can do on its own.

You need one anyway, the GB and the Union Flag are not recognised as an identifier by the EU, I posted it a while ago when the new rules were announced along with the new BS for number plates

I don't think its down to the EU. Number plate country identifiers are managed by the UN, specifically the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe authorised by the UN's Geneva Convention on Road Traffic and the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic. Most countries from around the world have signed up to this so the EU has no say in the matter.

It comes into law from September so you can no longer drive into Europe with GB plates just UK.

Another diversion from gov mishandling the pandemic...

- Will it actually be illegal in the EU if the car has either or both identifiers?

- Seems to me the safest solution to stay "safe" against the beaurucrats might be to have 'em both available then stick them on or take them off as necessary at the outgoing/incoming ferry port!
