I have just bought a CLK 320 Sport Coupe 1999 from a dealer. He could not supply more than one electronic looking key. Can you tell me how I go about getting an extra one or a mechanical one? Also I haven't got a clue how the cruise control works. Any clues? Also when I am stopped on a steep hill (the car is automatic) the car tends to roll backwards. Have I bought a lemon?

remote fob keys can be had from the dealers and need programming you can also get the key without the remote at most retailers aprox £8..

cruise there should be a button to turn it on and another button to set the speed when you get to the speed you want..

rolling back well that depends on the bank ratio but if its a small incline then the revs are too low

As I understand it all keys to Mercedes are a security item meaning that you have to provide the VIN, the logbook plus photo ID to get them made. Unfortunately you cannot get them anywhere other than MB as the electronic part that you refer to, handles the alarm/ immobiliser. So a normal key would open the doors but would set off the alarm and would not be able to start the car.

More worrying for you is that someone else could have a key that can open and start your car. This needs sorting as it can invalidate the theft part your car insurance. You need to check with your insurance company, and then you need to talk to the company that sold you the car, as it could get expensive. Worst case you are looking at two new keys plus door, boot and ignition locks :-( but it is still cheaper than losing the car.

You might be able to find out what happened to the second key by talking to the previous owner.

Best regards,

Peter

you can get mercedes to disable any keys that are missing. There should be 4 in circulation at any one time- 2 normal keys, 1 emergency key(looks like a credit card) and 1 master key held by MB themselves. just ask a MB dealer to do it, they charge about an hours labour. Also, a replacement key from MB is around £70. Manuals can also be ordered from a dealer.

My advice too, change locks etc. I would not take a chance on this.

To be honest the dealer should have sorted that out before giving you the car. If its an MB dealer I would insist on it or force him to give you an indemnity against theft. He can also access records that would show if a new key has ever been issued for the car and he should also account for the 2 missing keys.

Your insurance would be compromised if the car was taken without forced entry too.
