also, this car seems unbeleivably economical? seriously economical, is that normal? even with ac/climate on, around town and on runs. wat should they do on average?

The tapping could be a cam follower not priming properly until the oil pressure gets up a bit. If a blip on the throttle cures it I wouldn't worry too much. Mine (50k) has just started to tick for a second or so on startup.

On the economy front, define economical. Compared to the 123/124's they are a lot better, but I wouldn't use the word economical. I'm told the E230 was better than the replacement v6 240 (mine). what are you getting to the gallon ?

wel i live in bristol and go to salisbury alot, i have a 2.7 6 pot alpina bmw, and taking it easy ther and back it would cost 15/20 pounds wich is 125miles, yet in this merc, my light came on before i set of, i put in twenty pounds, hamered it ther and back as was on a time limit, got bak etc, and all in all got over 200 miles before the light came back on? give or take 10 miles. i find this amazing considering how heavy they must be + ac/climate + auto box? its over 40 mpg easy

Dare I say, it's a little too good?
If I turn off the aircon and take it easy I see 36mpg. If I step on it I will see 28. There are diesel owners who would be happy with 40!
Do another check and let us know what you get.

The only true way you are going to get accurate fuel figures is by running the tank from full to empty and re-filling and then doing the math.

40mpg for an E230 would be unique to say the least, espcially of you have been putting your toe down.

Steady 60ish motorway will produce 41/42 on the cdi [auto], push it on and you can drop it to 34. Town will bring it to about 29/31. Replaced front tyres at 43k, rear ones at 35k.

Tyre pressures are important, I use Pirelli P6000 at 38psi.

40 for petrol sounds rather good.....don't see that too often.

its as true as im sat here! thats why i posted about it as i was really suprised, but it is excellent on petrol. even with give or take added. but remember it is the 4pot and not the 240 v6. my guess is that uses a bit more
