Have a look at the spacers on top of the springs, there should be small dimples pointing down (like saw teeth) either 1,2,3 or 4. Hows your E for rust btw, have a good look at the front / rear arches, under the door frame rubber seals, boot lock, panel seams, front crossmember, front spring retaining cups etc, looks like you might still have some MB rust warranty. if you find any get off to your MB dealer sharpish.

thanks for the info, i will double check it! also, have read the rust things on here, sounds a bit worrying!? but iv got a feeling my car has been resprayed because the finish is absolutley un marked and looks to clean for the miles, and i had a good check for rust but couldnt see anything, even took of the number plate top bit and it all clean. maybe its been garaged. its hard to tell with the paint as its flawless, as u would expect a merc to be! maybe!

The basic paintwork is good. Mine looks wonderful (after I have washed it!) but it does have some hidden rust. (reported 2 months ago so just about to chase the dealer.)
Aside from the bottom of the boot lock, most of the rust spots are hidden. Do check for any traces of rust under the rubber seals on the doors (peel them back and look for brown staining etc) . Check the cross member etc As you say, there is a lot on this forum about it.

They are still a damn good car. I do 95 miles a day over the top of the M62 and I wouldn't want to drive anything else.

id have to agree, iv had 3 mercs before, but am a bmw fanatic, but i honestly think the eclass is more a seven series rival as its miles ahead of a 5 series. ive done 1500 miles last month and am very impressed with it. in all aspects, ride, econemy, comfort etc. excellent! (TOUCH WOOD)!!
