I have just bought a R plate 1997 SLK 230 Krompressor but the alloys are knackered. All blistered and pretty much beyond repair. It currently has 16" alloys on which appear to be standard.

I have the option to buy a set of four beutiful Merc Alloys for £180 with the following details:

4 BRAND NEW, UNUSED ORIGINAL MERCEDES BENZ 16" (7J) ALLOY WHEELS FROM NEW MODEL SLK (TYPE 171). STANDARD EQUIPMENT ON NEW SLK 200

1) Will they fit OK?

2) What are the standard tyres sizes for this model. Is it 225 55 16 on the back and 205 55 16 on the front?

3) Would anyone recommend the P7's?

Hope you can help - I collect the car tomorrow and I would like to get the alloys on asap.

Cheers

Hello Claire, youe existing wheels may look bad,but they can be restored for £250 max, better than new.

Wheel and Tyres causing me grief!

Hi Televison,

Thanks for your quick reply.

You are probably right, but the standard alloys are nothing to really write home about and the alloys I have been offered are lovely, sparkly and brand new!

On the rear of the wheels there is an ET number, check the number on your whells against the new ones ,i think you will find it is the same. I know of no reason why they should not fit as they are both 16" rims, that means you can use the same tyres.

Idiot Girl with Merc!

Hi

OK to confirm, because I am really stupid! :)

Are you saying you think I will find that all the existing alloys are 7j?

I thought the standard was 8j on the back and 7j on the front?

I am being really retarded?

I was reffering to the off set ET that's how much the wheels sit in or out on the car.
The numbers on the tyres 225 is the width, the next number is the % of the width. By rights the 225 % should be less ie 50 to compensate for the extra height and not 55, that makes them the same rolling diameter as the front 55's

I do not see 1" making much difference if you put the 225 55's on your new whells, but it is incorrect. You can have a word with the tyre fitter. On my own car that had 205's I changed to 225's to stop smashing wheels. used it for 6 years no problem, and I don't hang around.

my mrs has the standard 16" alloys on her R171. Let me know if you need any info. They're not great to look at if you're a wheel man ;) but I reckon they'd look fresh on a R170. Someone might mock you up a picture in paintshop with the new wheels on if you want to get an idea.

Thanks!

Thanks for all your feedback. All sounding like a go-er to me! :D

Charlie, does your Mrs' car have 16" 7J's all round then? According to Merc they should be 7J's on the front and 8J's on the back?

The chap is selling 4 x 7j's and by the sound of the last couple of replies the recommended tyres of 225 50 16 on rear and 205 55 16 on the front will fit these 7J rims no problem.

Yes correct,my SL uses the same wheels back and front as standard, when I use the AMG's, the rear are wider.

Awesome

Thanks for the feedback.

I have bought the alloys for just £180 for four and they are identical to the picture above. On the dark blue SLK they look superb!

Thank you again for all your help.

Anyone in a similar situation with wheel, I can confirm that the R170 happily holds 16" R171 alloys with 205 55 16's all round and it drives and looks fab!

Claire

Ps God I love this car!
