The new model is built on an entirely new platform, not shared with any other Mercedes model.

It's fabric roof can be opened or closed in just 15 seconds at speeds of up to 37MPH.

Inside, owners receive the latest generation MBUX system that is also found in the S-Class.

It will be touch screen which means fine motor skills required to navigate around it - and of course looking at it to see exactly what you've swiped, pressed on or deleted...

I bought my R231 as my forever weekend car, and wanted it partly because it has the best of both worlds with the folding hard top.

I still prefer this to the look of a ragtop, but otherwise the new model is stunning.

The touch screen is awful - imagine trying to change something when travelling - I have the same on Mrs DRMW's Citroen - not exactly a hard drive but still nigh on impossible to change while moving.

My sons A-Class is the same, trying to pinch the screen to zoom is challenging to say the least

I am slightly shocked that there is no folding metal roof.

The good news is that prices of R231 SL63s should come down quite a bit once the new model has been launched.

First impression is that it looks very 911 like, especially from the rear quarter.
