Good evening all,
I need a new thermostat (car takes an age to reach 80 degrees) .
A genuine Mercedes one is approximately £160, I can get one from EBay for just over half that.
Any opinions on if this is false economy ?
Car has done approaching 120 K miles and is a 2010.

Depends who makes it.
The one I’ve seen doesn’t give a manufacturer, just says OE Quality and has a 2 year warranty.
After market thermostats don’t seem that easy to come by ?

Personally I would give it a miss.
OE quality is a meaningless expression.

There’s a Borg and beck one on eBay, but that’s £120, so I’m going for a Genuine one.

I have a 265bhp E350 CDI. After a lot of looking previously, I've come to the conclusion it should be Merc only, so I think you're doing the right thing. Plus there are hardly any aftermarket.

Thanks Gents,
A bit more money on a part that will be still performing long after my ownership, but I’ll have peace of mind.

also ... how easy is it to fit? If it takes you all day to get access to change it, then OE all the way. If it's an hour of a job, then maybe you can gamble on aftermarket? ;)

Contact MB Newcastle,
you might find them through eBay anyway.

For main agents their prices seem keen.

I've found the best way to remove enough coolant for a t'stat change is to use a cleaned out Pela pump to syphon from the header tank.
I then remove the lower (larger) hose and syphon from that, as far into the rad is I can push.
Coolant goes back in later.

An ideal time to replace the coolant is when the stat is out as there is no valve. If your coolant change is due shortly, now is the time. Genuine MB stat and cooland is the way to go.
