Hi there,

Just bought a 2003 C200 CDI estate Automatic which requires more TLC than I was expecting although on a 20 year old car some maintenance was expected however was not expecting to be lied to so blatantly by the dealer it was brought from. In fact would not have looked at it all if the real mileage (in km's here of course) was mentioned and being an import and not registered here the LCD information screen was in German it was not until I found out how to put it into English and navigate the menu that the real mileage was revealed. On the test drive the screen showed the distance since last start up.

It was on the 90km drive home that I discovered that the windscreen washers do not function and that started my investigation to check for other issues and there are quite a few.

Hello and welcome,

Had a very pleasant holiday in Bulgaria this year. Many Mercedes were spotted.

Indeed they as well as BMW and VW are very popular here and so parts are more easily obtained than they were fro my previous car which was a Rover 75 CDT automatic that had been re-mapped to 160 bhp when the ECU was repaired. Sadly we parted company in a nasty collision 2 years ago and have been using the Discovery S2 TD5 since then.

Thank you.

There is much to learn s apart from moving them when I was a tyre/exhaust fitter and then when I drove a 6.4T slide and tilt recovery truck had never driven a Mercedes properly before. Tomorrow it's remove the steering wheel to investigate the indicator/wiper switch to try and find out why wipers only work sometimes and no screen washers. Have already fitted a new Febi washer pump which has not made any difference as pump does not run when stalk pressed in. Rear screen wipe washer works just fine now there is some washer fluid in the tank.

Welcome I also he'd a great week in Bulgaria a few years back.
Regarding the washers I would have a look at the washer tank end & pump first, much easier to get at.

Already bought and fitted new Febi washer pump but it's not working when one presses the wiper stalk, wiper operate most times when you do so but not always so next step is to look at the switch. I have a couple of weeks to get this sorted as then must take car to the KAT office in Veliko Tarnovo to get it inspected and registered. Need operating wipers and washer for that in case they check them if they do or not depends on how the people feel on the day it seems but besides that I NEED them working to be safe on the road!

Welcome. As Bulgaria is in the EU, you should be covered by the normal Consumer Protection Regulations which allow you to reject the car and return it to a trader for a full refund, if you want to. Good luck with that and I’m not sure how you would enforce it if the dealer doesn’t agree!

Indeed however despite being in the EU as after Brexit we are not EU citizens it seems that we have no rights!! The view of our advocate is that because the car is only of a fairly low value in their eyes one can not expect much for ones money. Again this morning when I started to car to move it over on the drive the message came up " TRAMISS. VISIT WORKSHOP!" no gears and LCD screen shows 1 Malfunction but after the temps outside warmed up a little we have gears again and the plan was to remove the steering wheel this morning to look at the indicator/washer stalk. So whilst waiting removed the engine covers to take a look. This engine is a 2.2 diesel lump and has a flat panel air filter not the round tubular one shown in most youtube vids.

Nephew rescanned for codes and there is a whole load of them now trying to find out what they are and mean 4 sytems responded 10 fault codes found!!!

Good luck - I’m sure it will all be worth it when it’s sorted. The Mercedes will be far superior to a Rover 75

For the money the rover 75 cdti is a great car ,I had an estate one was faultless throughout my tenure, really excellent engine but club is also superb just like this one.

That was my second 75 the first one was a 2.5 Auto Connoisseur both saloons and yes the 75/ZT club is great and before leaving the UK attended several of their meetings.. After discussions with the nephew have decided to reject the car as there are simply too many issues with it will speak to the dealer tomorrow (Monday) morning. As it is am out the cost of a set of new 17" all season tyres as she sits on aftermarket 17" Borbet 5 spoke lack/silver rims which we ordered as the fronts are only just legal.

Not sure about superior and I had 2 Rover 75's one Connoisseur 2.5 V6 Auto and the diesel CDT Club with the BMW 2 litre lump that was remapped to 160bhp.

Now due to the issues found with this C200 and we keep finding more!!! After discussion about it with the nephew who is far more familiar with Mercedes than I am have decided to reject it and take it back and demand a refund however expect to get legal and it will have to end up with court action. It's not worth paying out more to have it on the ramp for an inspection to discover more issues as it seems that both front and rear SAM's are throwing up codes.

Hello and welcome
Good luck with the return of the car.
I would have thought, you'd have legal rights in any country?
I tend to buy cars that require work myself. But not ones that are a cover up by unscrupulous dealers.....well, I try not too.

Well if the dealer lied about the true mileage of the car, then it should be pretty clear cut. As long as you have some documentation to prove it, I can't even see it going to court. A copy of the advert, a photo of the LCD information screen, plus a couple of witnesses should do it. Not sure why you would need to employ Lawyers at £000s per hour.
