Very surprised to find I need new tyres, and still not done 11k.
They are the orginal Pirelli P 6000.
Would appreciate any views.

I had some Dunlop SP40's on a Brand New Rover 400 and all 4 needed replacing at it's first MOT , 3 years 15,000 Miles.
I'd consider myself a steady driver etc even if I was a bit mad u'd understand the fronts goin maybe but the backs too

Aletank, you have made me feel a little less concerned.

Fortunately, my local ATS have a Pirelli offer of "buy one get one half price".

Better get the pain over and order 4 next week.

Thanks, Bryan Lowe

Check out these 2 online tyre dealers. They will deliver next day and your local tyre fitters should fit and balance etc for about £5 a wheel(they did for a m8 of mine)
http://www.mytyres.net/Tyres.html  . Their prices include VAT & Next Day Delivery

http://www.topgear.co.uk/ Their prices include VAT and 7 day Delivery or there's a next day option for £12

Also try Cost-Co if you have a card , they are very very cheap on Michelins

If the Pirellis didn't last that long why don't you try another brand, here's a tyre quality review chart for ya

I think them sites that sell the tyres also recomend tyres and I think one of them have tests on them.

Good Luck and let us know how ya get on

Thanks Aletank, I will investigate.

For a less frustrating life I prefer to deal with a local supplier. To sort out problems or get repairs, I can talk to someone, leave the car and walk home.

Aletank, I have spent a very useful hour exploring the sites you suggested.

I am a lot less confused on the choices, and have some valuable knowledge on prices and technical specs.
However, mindful of " a little knowledge can be dangerous", I am thinking of keeping it simple.

So, providing the price is in the right parish, I will keep my good spare and buy 4 identical Pirelli, and forget about tyres for a couple of years.

Thanks for your help.

Bryan I have a S400 and S320L.  When I bought the car I thought that I had about 10k left on the tyres.  These were Pirelli.  After driving about 4k I had to change the 4 tyres and I chose Pirelli P 9000 I think - Cost about £600.  18k later they were near illegal so I changed to Continentals - Cost 380.  At about 22k they still have life in them.

Pirelli give better road holding and a slightly better ride as the rubber is softer and wears quicker.

The new S class MB tyres I hear are about £200 each and last only about 12k.

Do consider the make and what you expect from the tyres.

Hi Bryan

Were the worn tyres on the back of the vehicle. If so. Then they will be worn in the middle of the tyre. That is were they are probably illegal. The outer edges will probably have 3-4mm left. If this is the case. Step of the gas as Dave has mentioned.

Pesonally I feel although Pirelli is a great make. Those P6000 are a bit on the soft side. So any "vigourous" driving tends wear them out a little quick.

It is a bone of contention with MB drivers where it is possible to have tyres worn out before the first service has taken place!!!!!!!! Due to the long service intervals.

You should note it is YOUR responsibility to make sure the tyres have the minimum tread allowed ( 1.6mm) before every journey.

I am just saying, I don't always check mine before setting of either!!!!!, nor do some of my customers judging by the slicks which we take off from time to time. Can't even use em for F1 racing these days. Ha!!!

Hi Bryan
I personaly have tried practicaly every make of tyre on the market & on more cars than I care to remember & this experience has proved to me that PIRELLI is not the tyre for me.
when you have experienced blow outs on the motorway & splits in the tyre tread with wire strands popping thru ,Plus only 8000 mls wear on the back then you will understand WHY I dont like Pirelli !!
The tyre that I have found to be Reliable, hardwearing & reasonably priced is the FIRESTONE Firehawk a great tyre all round & beats all the top brand makes, try them, you wont be disappointed. good luck

Ashley,
Thanks for the reply, sorry about a delay in acknowledging.

Your experience seems to be similar to mine.

It would have made sense to try a different make, but my spare was perfect. The special Pirelli offer made it too easy just to buy 4 and have 5 perfect tyres.
The total cost was £360
