As an old duffer my resolution is to buy a two seater SL which is wholly impractical but will be my last foray into such an indulgence for a few years before I’m eventually obliged to buy a Honda Jazz. (No sniggering please!)

Do your self a HUGE favour and research well. If u do u can get a nice motor .dont and repent at leisure.they can have a damaging effect on yr wallet esp if yr not diy type.good luck I enjoyed mine but eventually realised that for me something less able to drain my wallet was better idea .

Nothing impractical about a two seater for two people. :);) 4 seater for 2 people -- that is extravagant.

Thinking about buying a rangerover sport as a daily so i can keep the eclass for weekends. My eclass has only done 66k and i need something thats good to drive over the winter months because i have had a few brown pants moments over the last few weeks with the merc.

Get winter tyres for the Mercedes. You want unreliable buy a Range Rover...

Buy an SLK (preferably the R171 55AMG) none of the nonsense that SL’s suffer with and a great little package.
And get a Honda Jizz for the shopping

If you want quality and class then consider the Merc and a Lexus SC430!
Drive both then decide. And report back please.

I've lost the link but on a youtube video I read that the SLK was roomier inside than the SL. How come? The SLK is a smaller car.

Having driven both, the SL is much larger than the SLK both inside and out.
Being smaller on the outside is a benefit on small country roads. Being smaller on the inside means you have to be a bit more creative with packing. Drop the seat as low as it will go and 6’ers can fit easily.

Biggest thing with the SLK is you don’t get the “boing” of warning messages you do in the SL. I use mine as a daily so the nagging doubt of when the “boing” will go off is something I can live without. I also like being dry...

Well I've been deliberating what to do. I have a showroom condition. R170 SLK230 and an extremely good condition W209 CLK220 Coupe, neither of which gets used much. Common sense says l need to sell one of them and "manage" with just one car. I love them both but l don't think l can bear to part with the R170, so it looks like the 209 will have to go. Not yet though but perhaps in the Spring or Summer. If anyone wants a really good 209 coupe and they're prepared to wait a few months then let me know. I can send photos etc and answer any questions, but in brief it's the Elegance model in Obsidian with black leather, 52k miles, full history and is pretty much faultless with zero rust. Had it 12 months, purchased from MTSV Classic Mercedes and he doesn't deal in rubbish.

Keep both and use them. The time for decent cars to drive is nearly at and end so enjoy what you have while you still can.

Yes l understand that but l simply don't do enough mileage now to justify keeping and maintaining two cars. Plus l have undercover parking (car port) for only one. Reluctant decision really but common sense is going to prevail I'm afraid.

I own an SL R231 like Rory and have access to an SLK, put it this way my daughter with the SLK begs to drive the SL as it is in a wholly different league.

If you buy the R231 rather than the older R230 you will have very little running issues, all the old issues have been resolved. I have only bought tyres, pads and a battery in over 3 years.

Also the SL is a rarer beast on the roads a bit like comparing a Porsche Boxster to a 911.

The Range Rover Sport is a great car and have owned 2 both from new. Never had a problem with either, but they are expensive beasts and need to properly maintained.

Range Rover forums are full of people who buy a "cheap" Sport and cannot afford to keep it up together.
They are complex cars and true 4 x 4 's that will take you almost anywhere that most folk never want to go!

I have a 212 E class & 2 sets of wheels summer & winter. My winters are 245/17” I have never had a problem driving in the winter in any conditions over the last 8 winters. Until you drive on winter tyres you won’t believe just how good they are. You might be able to fit 225/16” wheels to your E250, depends if you have the front sport callipers. They preform even better in snow having a narrower tread width, & are cheaper. Loads of wheels on eBay.
