I have family in England and thought it would be nice to get
perspective from our fellow friends of MB's in the UK, and to
exchange info about the cars we all drive.

Currently, there are two posts ongoing about rust in the later model
E-Class MBs.


I currently drive a 1987 Mercedes 300D Turbo. It has recently received
a transplanted OM603 six cylinder diesel from out of an 87 300SDL with
167K

As you may be aware, fuel prices here in the US are skyrocketing yet
diesel remains 20 to 30 cents lower than gasoline. My 300D gets approximately 31 mpg combined. I haven't had it long enough to
calculate hiway mpg but some claim as much as 40 mpg. I'm glad I
now have a diesel.

What is fuel costing in the UK?

OK then, You're paying about $2.31 per US Gallon. We are paying about £4.0 per UK gallon which in Real US terms is:-


£4 x 1.81 = $7.24 per UK Gallon
Divide by 0.8326742 = $8.70 per US Gallon

Fuel prices!!!

I have been aware for many years that fuel prices in the UK are much higher than in the US.

Yes, many of us here are unaware of $8.70 equivalent per gal. (gasoline I presume) in the UK. Is diesel less money? Just curious......

In the UK diesel and petrol are about the same price, unlike in many other Europen countries where diesel can be nearer half the price of petrol.

When I was first driving (30 years ago!) diesel was about half the price of petrol, but was hardly used other than by commercial vehicles. As diesel engined cars have become more popular the tax has moved up. Today in the UK over half the new cars registered are diesel powered.

The only fuel we get a tax break on is LPG, but be assured as this becomes more popular the tax will be increased.
