Just picked up a 1999 CLK 320 AMG with 50k on the clock and I am now a happy man.

Just 2 small niggles though:-

1. I can't seem to operate the total closure function on the key fob. I put the windows down then stepped out the car and shut the door. I then pressed and held the lock button on the remote whilst pointing at the drivers side door handle - the doors lock, but the window does not go up!

2. The Tax Disc holder is hanging on for it's life and I really want to replace it. However when I tried to remove it I noticed that it has a wire attached to it leading behind the dashboard  The car has a Nokia handsfree kit fitted, but is that what the wire is for or am I missing something completely obvious?

You expert help is much appreciated.

Cheers,

Kitt.

Hi & Welcome,

1) The open/close all windows and roof function is controlled by the Infrared part of the key. Therefore you need to be pointing the key at either the drivers door handle IR receiver or the passenger door handle IR receiver. The range is a lot shorter than RF locking/unlocking.

2) Your tax disc holder will also be a mobile phone antenna. You really should have a body mounted antenna as when your car was new Mercedes (and BMW for that matter) could invalidate the warranty if any mobile antenna other than a body mount one was installed. If you are not going to be using the car phone kit then you can remove this with no problems. You can remove it and still use the car phone kit you may just find that your mobile coverage is not quite as good.

Just tried the remote again and I was pressing the lock button 1mm away from the Infrared part of the door handle, but still no closed windows?!?

Surely I'm not that thick :-?

Any more advice?

my 1995 C class had total closure. Its been around forever.
If yours is the 3 button key I wonder whether the radio bit is working fine (hence it still locks ok) but the IR isn't. Do you have another key to try?.
Test the key with a digital camera to make sure its putting something out of the IR side.

On my 2000 W210 E320 I get full closure no problem using Blobcat's method above. Must be the same as yours so I guess there must be a problem somewhere.

You should be able to see the infrared receiver on the door handle, a small square.

If this is fitted then you do have the "comfort open and closing feature". I have not seen any car with it not fitted for quite some time so I assume it is standard.

If fitted then the problem is most likely either the key or the sensors. If neither key will activate the feature, then the sensors are suspect.

I had a similar problem a couple of years ago, dealer changed a sensor with one they had in stock, and all worked fine. Ordered me two new ones as I was informed the one on the drivers door handle is vehicle specific. (don't ask me why) They took five minutes to fit and cost £78.

Hope this helps.

IT WORKS !!!!!

I opened the windows and did as Bobcat said and hey presto, the windows closed.

Is it right that you have to hold the 'Close' button down all the time till the windows are fully closed ? As mine seems to have to be done like that, unless there is a special press of the button trick I don't know about.

Thanks for you help on this all...... I'm so happy I joined this forum !

Yes the button must be depressed while the total closure is taking place

Thanks Malcolm.... just out of interest, what does the "Test the key with a digital camera to make sure its putting something out of the IR side" mean ?

The red LED means nothing much only that the battery is ok, the camera checks the IR part

Mine only comes on for a split second !

They should flash pulsing continuously, though of coarse you do not have to take a picture, yes the timing on that one worked out OK

I have now tried this on the passenger side and it all works fine.

I can only assume it's a faulty sensor on the drivers door.

"MB" here I come cheque book in hand, or two :D

Is it right that if you change the fob battery you might have to reset / programme the fob ?

Is fob programming easy ?

If you change the battery in less than ~60 secs it should not require re-syncing. On the newer 3 button keys the battery is a CR2025. I believe that the latest keys have 2 x CR2025 batteries.
