Just Bought me a e320 avantgarde 97. luckily from a merc dealer with full MB service history.

being the 1st merc i owned i read through all the handbooks\destructions

I Liked the idea of the service light as i thought it stops people missing it etc as the computer can tell

Imagine my dismay to find in the owners handbook how to reset this yourself with no hook in required

So other than a jazzy reminder instead of a sticker in the engine bay whats the point of the service light ?

It is only a reminder, your service book is stamped with the true milage as to when the service was carried out

Initially it was just a reminder, like the BMW system, though it did adapt with driving style so you could often get more time if you drove correctly and less if you didn't. Later Assyst based systems have an oil sensor that can tell if you're trying to fool it and will complain. As TV says, the best check is the time and mileage in the service book, otherwise it doesn't need to be reset, it could simply be ignored by a neglectful owner.
