Driving to work last week (in Russia) I was unfortunate enough to hit a rather large pot hole in the road,Burst a tyre & bent the alloy wheel rim. I was thinking I needed a new wheel & tyre untill a local friend directed me to a repair shop & they did an excilent job of repairing the wheel.They had a machine that had a double set of rollers that fitted the rim & slowly "rolled" the wheel back into shape with a little heat applied. New set of Mitchelin pilots fitted & all was well again.
The tyre shop was advertising replacing the air in tyres with nitrogen. My Russian wasnt good enough to understand the reason why,I think he was saying it was a smoother ride?. Any members know the reason for refilling with nitrogen.

From a previous thread on the subject;

[Any benefits with Nitrogen?

none unless you are racing. I just have a cylinder which needs using up.

it does hold the pressure more constant as its not affected by humidity, and this is also the same when driving, but for road use, its more important to keep your tyres in good condition and check the pressures regularly.

even in racing its a tiny differential, but they measure it in 0.1psi's unlike us, so they can see the difference more. to be fair, its more use to them in high humidity conditions where the moisture in air can affect the pressure more.

they also use it in air operated tools, as its less of a risk with oils and stuff knocking about, so there is the economy perspective too for race teams.

anyhow. makes no difference in road car use.]

Hi George, love your jokes in the joke section. Anyway we us Nitrogen in South China and I totally agree with you. Because we are in the sub tropics, the humidity is horrendous. My first experience of humidity effect on tyres came when removing a tyre and found about three litres of water in there:confused: I could not understand where the water had come from and the wheel would not balance until the mechanic said we should open the tyre.Then the connection hit me (humidity when filling the tyre with air) and many subsequent top ups. As for the racing bit, yes ive been there too with the super car class, Porsche and Ferrari. The difference between air fill and Nitrogen is a measure of temperature on the sliks, so small that I wonder if it would be any use on road cars except if you do a lot of high speed motorway driving? So overall, for UK drivers, I would say its no use.

Thank you all for the information.
It seems Nitrogen would be a wast of time here as the humidity isnt high & the roads are not good ( although many drivers here think they are on a race track )The roads in fact are very bad,that how I damaged the wheel in the first place.
Thanks again

I understand your feelings, my early days in China were just as bad. lousy concrete roads and bricks fall off trucks etc, and if you dont have a horn dont drive.;)
