Hello all,
my 1984(B reg) 200T has for some time not had first gear on the Auto box. The gear box has a slight oil leak but I do top up the oil occasionally. However I do find it very difficult to measure the level on the dipstick when running in P - as the oil doesn't leave an obvious line on the stick - unless its me smearing it when I pull the stick out! Could it be low oil level?
Anybody got any ideas what the problem could be please as pulling away at roundabouts is a hazardous process at the moment!
All other gears O.K. and no unusual noises from the box.
Thanks
Paul
P.S. still not sorted my choke problem - if, as appears to be the case, the choke mech is worn/coming off too early, is this an expensive repair? i.e. do I have to replace the Carb including the choke mech? or is it repairable?
Any thoughts?

Scotty, your car is of the right age (as mine is) to have the hydraulic box which always defaults to a second gear start anyway. Have you tried stopping the car, pull the stick back to 2 then push it forward to D. That should force a 1st gear start. At least that way you will know that nothing is wrong.
