No OVP on a W210 - so what's the problem

I've been having starting problems with my 1999 E240 estate, which from reading in the forums, sound a little like OVP problems. However, I'm fairly sure my E240 doesn't have an OVP.
Initially car showed intermittent starting problem, but only when warm. Started great either hot or cold, but if left for an hour or so, it wouldn't start until it had cooled right down again. Called MB out a couple of times, but by the time they got there it had cooled and started OK - they couldn't identify a problem. Problem worsened when on a few occasions recently it died as I was driving, and of course, then wouldn't start until it cooled down - no fun when you’re the first at the lights!
Had MB take it away last week. They put on a new mass airflow sensor and new RPM sensor (sender unit) - cost £580. Seemed to be going OK, but started very poorly yesterday and again this morning - took 8 to 10 seconds to fire up and sounded like it really didn't want to start.
Any suggestions as to what else I might check, as I don't really want to fork out another £500 to Mr MB.
Any advice greatly accepted. Thanks.

Sounds like the crankshaft position sensor is faulty, this normally starts to show symptoms with the engine cutting out when hot then able to restart after about 20 minutes or so, your difficult starting may just be a progression of the same problem.
No. 5 in this diagram ; http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.as...23716.634&CT =M&cat=19X&SID=15&SGR=075&SGN=04
I would advise you to find an independent MB specialist in your area ,check the yellow pages , as it sounds like your dealer will just substitute parts until they empty your bank account.

Must be the cranshaft sensor, its the only bit not to record a fault code.
How the hell can MB change the MAF for a non or hard starting car.

Canice you mention in your post you had an RPM sensor replaced can you be more specific as I wonder if this was a crankshaft position sensor

On the phone the guy from MB said he had replaced the 'knock sensor', but on the printed invoice under labour it says:
"RPM Sensor Remove/Install, Replace If Necessary"
A little further down, under parts it says:
"MA003 153 28 28 Sender Unit (£70.95)" and
"MA112 150 04 33 054378/Starter Line (£24.63)"
I'm afraid I don't know what a crankshaft position sensor is, but I will certainly do some checking to see if I can learn about it.
Thanks for your response!
