I put a comment on here last week, after replacing the head gasket on a mercedes w124 280. I went to start the car and there was no spark. After further investigation we have found the wiring loom is deteriated where it plugs into the coils. Does anybody know the price for a new wiring loom or could it be possible to get a second hand one? Look forward to the comments. Thanks Daz.

New one is about £500. Second may have a similar problem unless you find one that someone has replaced. Common problem.

Check the loom on the end where it plugs into the ECU, there should be a Tag on it with the part number.

Good luck in finding one.

You might find the loom closer to £700 dont know why but a C180 loom was quoted to me at £639 yet a V12 £500

Send me your Vin privately and I will see how much on monday I should be able to supply for less than retail.

hi daz250 i had the same problem on my e280 last year, if you go to your main dealer they can supply a part loome for around £25.00 to £30.00, now what this is, is four wires, and at the end of three of the wires are your coil connections the fourth is an earth,
what you need to do is, undo the insulation tape on the harness from the coils and find a good connection point, its going to be close to the main ECU plug where theres no heat, as this is what causes the problem, my connection was as the harness passes through the bulk head near the battery, once you find that connection all you need to do is cut off the old wires and then solder the new wires together, they are colour coded so its not that hard then insulate each wire with tape,

BUT DO NOT / NOT / DO WHAT I DID , ?? I CARRIED OUT THE REPAIR VERY WELL AS I THOUGHT ?? BUT WHEN I STARTED HER I SEEN SMOKE COMING FROM THE AIR MASS BEFORE I HAD CHANCE TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERY IT BURNT OUT THE, THE AIR MASS/O.V.P.R/ AIR SENSOR / THROTLE BODY / TEMP SENSORS/ AND THE WHOLE LOOME/ ??, THE BEST WAY TO DO THE REPAIR AS I FOUND OUT LATER, ?? IS TO REMOVE THE HARNESS COMPLETLY FROM THE CAR, AND ONCE YOU MAKE THE CONNECTIONS FOR THE COILS, IS TO CARRY ON UNDOING THE INSULATION ON ALL THE OTHER WIRES, AND IF NEED BE RENEW ONE WIRE AT A TIME, ITS TIME COSUMING BUT IT COST LESS THEN A NEW LOOME , hope this helps if you need any more help E.MAIL ME

I am one of the guys that posted on your previous thread.

The complete engine wiring loom varies in price depending on the part number for your car.

The part number depends on the spec and options you have built into your car such as :

auto or manual,

if auto is it 4 or 5 speed

air con or not

traction control or not

type of traction control if fitted ie ASD OR ASR

etc etc.

There seems to be three part numbers for your car depending on the full VIN which needs to be given to the parts person and also make sure the parts person know what options your car has.

The retail cost including VAT ranges from £689 to £667. You can get 10% off the overall price via the online Merc parts order service making it £620 to £600.

There seems to be a quirk with your car as it is listed a Japanese spec model.

Do you know that ??? Best wishes

hi daz250, the part loom comes complete with the rubber mounts that sit in the head covering by the coils, the wires them self are about 3 foot long, and it comes complete with coil fixings, and you don,t need any fault codes cleared, but as i said in my thread do check the other wires as this can be a major problem if you don,t

Info for rewire

Hi Daz just a quick word about the coil wiring
The coils are supplied with 12v from a connector at the end of the loom, farthest from the ecu this is located on the nearside bulkhead and terminates on a M4 bolt, the injectors also pick up their 12v feed from there.
The wire size in the schematic is 1.5 mm squared although i have used 0.5mm with no ill effect.
the easiest way to do this is to run 3 new wires from the above mentioned connector one to each coil and tape them to the outside of the existing loom replacing the existing pink/red wires on the coils, the coil connections are soldered from the factory and are easy to open up.
The other side of the coils needs to be wired as follows
T1/1 which supplies cylinders 2 and 5 goes to pin 9 on the ecu plug at the other end of the loom.(black/yellow wire)
T1/2 which supplies cylinders 3 and 4 goes to pin 10 on the ecu plug at the other end of the loom.(black/white wire)
T1/3 which supplies cylinders 1 and 6 goes to pin 21 on the ecu plug at the other end of the loom.(black wire)
These wires are all 1.5mm squared.
The easiest place to connect these three is inside the ecu plug housing as the insulation should be fine inside there cut the wires and solder on the new wires heat shrink the joints.
It goes without saying to double check that your wiring follows the same layout as this, simply unplug the ecu connector and buzz the wires out with a continuity tester.Disconnect the vehicle battery as well before starting work.
A suitable wire is tri-rated panel wire most electrical wholesalers will have this,If you are unsure about doing this an auto electrician should be able to do it in a couple of hours
Good luck
Paul

BUT
is it the correct part number for the spec of car and the options on the car (as outlined in previous post)

I would not do it, even if it is correct part number, and if original it WILL be too old and there WILL be cracks in the insulation leading to coil plugs.
