Been away for a while but now I'm back and I've got a problem.

Exactly this time last year, my '93 320 CE refused to start due to no spark. In the time it took to investigate this....pouring over wiring diagrams, trying to find relays etc, (took about a week) it burst into life as if nothing was wrong.

Well, it's doing it again (no Spark) and because it fixed itself last time, I'm no wiser.

The fact that it happened at the same time of year says to me that it's temperature-related, but that's no help really.

One thing I did notice was that the OVP relay was buzzing, I know these things can cause problems but I didn't think it would cause no spark. The buzz stopped when I tapped it by the way....

Anyone else had this......and how did you fix it?

Desperate of Banstead.....

remove the OVP with battery connected and wait a few seconds before replacing it, this will spike the OVP relay and it should get you going until you get a new one.

The OVP relay will not be the cause of the car not starting, I would suspect a fuse with a poor contact.

The OVP relay just turns on the ABS and gives a high idle when faulty.

What ign system do you have.

My fathers 320CE wouldnt spark either just cranked on the key all day with spark, removed the OVP and cleaned it and checked it but made no difference, removed the OVP with the battery connected this time and the car fire up straight away, few days later I fitted a new OVP and the problem hasn't come back.

Fair enough, them is odd things, and there can and will be the odd one that does something different, so thank you for pointing this out.
They can be soldered up inside, with a voltage check there should be 12v on all pins numbered 87 also the fuse on top.

Thank you again Jibcl500

I, will give that some thought, I do know that there is a problem with the lids on the fuse boxes and there are water issues with water getting in the box, there are 2 modified lids now. there is a SAM in the box and it is here where the problems start

Malcolm,

What ignition do I have.........err, how do I tell?

There are 3 coils mounted close to the plugs, if that's any help.

It could be the crank position sensor which is located in the bell housing and costs about £85.

This is the most vital sensor on the engine and it is an essential ECU input.

Degradation of the sensor windings because of heat can occur and the input signal to ECU goes out of spec. A car travelling at 70 mph can suddenly come to an abrupt halt due to this fault.

Crank sensor Part Number

MAlcolm,

Thanks for the link, but I'm being a bit thick here as I don't understand the engine numbering system.

My engine number is 104992 2201295. The engine numbers in the list have more digits than this so I can't work out the part number I need untill I decipher this.

I believe my engine is HFM-type, does the link you supplied apply to this type of engine?

Sorry it's taking me so long, I'll be buying online and I'm desperate to avoid buying the wrong part....

I was like this at school!

with a sensor so vital, you need to go to dealer and give the parts person your VIN. That way if there have been any mods in the meantime you WILL get the correct part for your car. Parts tend to ever evolve (even when the car is out of production) and the only reliable way to get the correct part is to visit the dealer. Ask for at least 10% or even 15% discount.

A recent example is the rear suspension links for your car, which are now rationalised with the parts on W210 cars, a more modern vehicle.

I have not looked back at the previous posts, but have you had the fault codes read, which is number one priority.

Dave,

Yes, I've done the blink-code thing....no faults (one flash).

I wasn't surprised, helpfull diagnosis would have been too much to hope for....

That link is correct for the 104.992 engine

The problem is Malcolm it is not an EZL system on his car. The EZL system uses a distributor whereas PaulG's car is the fully electronic HFM system.

I still recommend going via the dealer in this case, just in case.

Fixed It !!!

Turned out to be the OVP Relay after all, if the online scrappy didn't send me the wrong one, I would have been driving it 3 weeks ago, instead of having to suffer a Fiesta.

Being of an Electronics background, I'm disgusted with myself that I couldn't have worked it out from the diagram, after all, it's what I do all day.......but I've never seen such a difficult to follow diagram anywhere......it appears to give so much information, but manages to hide all the important bits...

Anyway, I'm back on the road again, many thanks to everyone that posted, for the suggestions and support..

Well its good that it is going again, Yes the diagrams are bad enough to make me want to give up, and I have been reading them since 1948.

I used to tell people basics first OVP relay pin 30 is the input and all pins 87 are the outputs and must have 12 v on them
