Noise from rear !

Hi folks, this is my first post!
I have recently purchased a C180 Auto. I have had a few problems with it (more than i expected for a merc), but the one i cant get to the bottom of is a noise from the rear end. During a visit to the local Merc specialist the said they didnt know but suspected tyre noise from the budget tyres that were fitted on the rear. The noise though only starts after 55-60mph and is intermittent(a few seconds at a time). It does ressemble a tye noise but doesnt necessarily change with the road surface. I would appreciate any ideas or has anyone experienced something similar.

Do you have an oil leak from the diff?

No no oil leak

You could swop the wheels front to rear to see if the noise moves. If so change the offending tyres.

Have swopped front for rear wheels. I'm sure the noise is now louder & coming from the front. Will get new tyres in due course.
