Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help.
I have a 2004 E320 cdi which generally I am really pleased with
BUT
The engine noise sounds like a tractor, its been checked by two garages now who both say they cant find anything wrong that the injectors are alright etc etc. But I'm sure the vehicle shouldnt sound like a tractor. Its still under warranty and I'm a bit concerned that there may be a problem which they simply dont want to resolve until the warranty expires.
OR
Do all E320cdi's sound like a tractor?

It depends on what you consider a tractor sounds like. To be honest my 270cdi sounds a bit tractor like and the two things that struck me when i took out a 320 were the noise and the power..
Yes the straight 6 320cdi is a bit noisy. Certainly compared to a petrol equivalent and not in the sound or refinement league of the newer diesels. I went out in a new 220cdi the other day and it was a revelation. Smmoth, quiet and as quick as my car. Certainly made mine feel a bit agricultural.

If you are in doubt, go to your dealer and take one of their used examples for a spin (make sure it's a straight 6, not a v6) and compare them.

I do not think mine is loud at all, but then again it depends upon your frame of reference. I have tried the 220 & the 270 in both the C class and E class and thought both louder than my IL6 320.
Although I was sat in a new V6 320CDI which seemed quieter, although I would really need Parrot of Doom and his sound equipment along with a few dB meters to really assess it.
This may be a case in that if you notice something it becomes a problem. One of the ships I used to work on had the loudest Radio Station clock ever. For the first couple of days it was all you could hear, however once you were used to it you never noticed it until you focused on it.

I think you need to compare with another similar reg car. I find my 320CDi very quite for a diesel when warm.

Obviously at this time of year you will get more clatter on start-up especially when running at +5 OT and below.

I would share your concern as the engine is not noted for noisy running.
