Hi Guys,
I have a w202 c200 (auto) and the brakes make a crunching sound when I apply and release them. Anyone know what the cause is and how I could rectify it? Thanks in advance.

The noise could be rust on the rear disc this weather.

If the car does not do many hard stops,, then the rear disc can get rusty, as there is only 28% effect on the rear wheels.

The only way to clear it is some very hard stops on a road where it is safe to do that,or a long downhill with no one behind you.

The disc are made of cast iron and that can rust just by breathing on it. When I lived in Sweden this is something that you have to do often.

The above is they only thing that I can think of to make that sound, very coarse pads could make the sound and a visual inspection of the disc should tell you, though it is impossible to see the inside of the rear disc

Unless they are worn out of course?
You might also have something jammed in between pad and disk.
Try applying brakes whilst reversing it may clear the obstruction
