I have a 2001 E 320CDi Estate. I get a lot of noise which I thought could be wheel bearings, but the garage inspected the car and said it was the tyres that were giving excessive road noise. Does anyone have advice to which tyres are most suitable and give a quiet ride?

Tyres can be very noisy, I had some Avons, but the noise was unbearable.

if you look at the tread on your tyres, it should be flat,if some of the blocks or thread is higher in places that will make the noise. My Avons whined at 40MPH onwards.

i had falkens on my w220, recently changed to dunlop sp9000, massive massive difference in noise.

car is almost deadly silent

cant say i have ever heard of wanli,
always go for a premium make of tyres and ask the tyre place the hardness of the compound and the likely noise it will make.

a reputable tyre place will know!

w.r.t post by malcolm and the avons, i believe they are a hard compound, so noise is expected.

As well as what tyres, what size are they? as the width and profile can make a massive difference to the amount of noise.

The tyre size is 235 45 R17 - I think they are the standard wheels.

16" was standard for AG's, they are quite wide and also low profile not good for road noise.

Found this on another MB site :-
" have just been running a E200K Hire Car that was fitted with Wanli tyres and I have to say that they were awful in the wet or damp.....felt as if you were driving on ice most of the time.
Its the most times that I have had the back end of a car step out just going around slow speed corners......scary stuff! They were also very noisy.........they hummed quite badly at motorway speeds"

Apparently they're Chinese ? Anyway, the 45profile & 17in wheels will only magnify their effect. I found this with a Mondeo a few years back - the big alloys looked great, but the ride was unforgiving. I had Dunlops 9000's then and didn't find noise an issue

I had the same problem (also with 2001 E320CDI Estate) and have now switched to Bridgestones. The noise has gone, and the road holding is also miles better:)

I'm finding the road holding not good. At least it's making me drive slower! I'll choose one of the recommended makes when I next change tyres. Thanks for all the info.
