I have a bearing noise from the front end of my engine, was advised to change the tensioner pulley, done this (£23) and the noise was reduced, now I have also got noisy alternator bearings! What is the best/cheapest way to sort this i.e refurb or replace or second hand, does anybody have an alternator? 1994 w202 020, Thanks. Patrick

Patrick are you sure that the bearings are noisy on the alternator, that is quite rare. With the belt off you can feel them if they are bad

Noise

Hi Malcolm,
My local mechanic said it was the alternator, im not that sure!! how do i take belt off? im not that good with mechanical! It is the only thing letting the car down, the tensioner pulley was noisy as well but thats ok now. If it is the alternator i think this will be pricy! Patrick

If you are sure ask a Bosch service center for the price of a recon or repair yours

Go to the dealer locator at the top in the lnk and ask them

S class
94 vintage yea possible alternator bearings, tho as malcolm has said not a common problem, Your best bet I think on a car of that year is to go for a recon or s/h alternator, new would be way too expensive

When you refer to a bearing noise, could it be a squeeky polybelt?A quick & easy check is to carefully apply a bit of fine graphite powder to the ribbed side of the belt with the engine at idle(talcum powder works too,but is very messy).WATCH YOUR FINGERS THOUGH!
Where are you,as I may have an alternator.

I am in Falkirk, Scotland, Can I just buy a bearing and fit myself then?

Yes change them both and take an old bearing with you and the bearing shop will match it up.

When fitting the new ones, pop the bearings in the freezer, and heat up the alternator end plates, and they will drop in

My local auto electricians changed the alterator front bearing for £20 all in, the old one was howling due to worn groves and balls. (all in = off car - mend - on car)

The old bearing is marked 6303 CS 14, that's a standard metric single row ball race with integral seals, any engineering supplier will be able to supply one at a sensible price.
I think this bearing size is common on all older Bosch alternators.

Getting the old one off is the biggest headache, hence my passing it off to D&G in Chorley, an outfit the fire police and ambulance services use coz they are OK and very helpfull.

Bearing Services in Grangemouth hold a large stock of bearings and will order in if required. I have had alternator bearings from them, though not for MB. Hope this helps.

With the end plates sitting over a large socket, the bearing can be knocked out via a punch on the center part, the bearing is no good, so nothing lost, as in my earlier post by freezing the ball race and warming the end plates they will just fall into place.

When replacing bearings they may have dots stamped on the outer race, and one with a similar number of dots should be used

Sounds as if it could be the alternator overrunning pulley; when the one-way clutch goes in them they become noisy. This usually affects the smooth running of the poly belt and can give charging problems. To check, remove the poly belt anc check that the pulley freewheels in one direction only. The pulley also tends to get really hot if it's knackered and if so I would recommend replacing the poly belt at the same time as the pulley itself (an easy job).
