Firstly, I know nothing about cars or mobile phones!
I've jsut bought an E800 Classic (W, 2000 reg) fitted with a CarK91 kit.
I also bought a new Nokia 6310i and, naively, assumed that all i would have to do is put the phone in the holder and all would be well.
The phone rings ok, but on pressing the phone button on the steering wheel, I get a little phone icon with the message "This function not available".
Is this going to cost me an arm and a leg to get working?

Cars are bigger usually and make your arm ache if you hold them to your ear.

Hope that helps.

Hello have had a 5110 and 6310i in Nokia kits. The phone should realise that it is in a cradle and show an image of a car below the service provider logo. I have had plenty of probs with this mainly because my daughter used the phone as a teether and sent the contacts green. Check the contacts (little gold pins in the base of the cradle) to make sure they are all sticking up and are straight and also try using the phone as a basic handsfree kit i.e. without the steering wheel controls, but press the phone keypad to operate the phone, does it work then. It may be that you have a basic kit with its own speaker rather than the "plumbed in" affair where the voices come through your audio speakers. I hear voices quite often. Under accessories setting on your phone there is an option to select handsfree kit and there is also an in the car profile on mine but that could have been set up by me a while ago.

The cark91 kit is not a Merc kit, its a Nokia one. Only pre-wired merc kits work with the steering wheel buttons and dash display. I believe you can after-fit a pre-wire, but along with your arms and legs, you will probably need to include a few other appendages to cover the cost. Not worth it. (its around £1k for a newer merc).
I have pretty much the same arrangement in my 2000 E240 - Nokia 6310i and Nokia kit (probably cark91), external speaker etc. It works just fine, is easy to use, mutes the radio when in use and charges up on the way home. Sure the steering wheel buttons don't work and I can't recieve text messages on the dashboard - but I'll live.
I strongly recommend setting up the speed dials though. Just pressing and holding '2' for a second to ring home is a lot safer than looking it up in the memory or typing in the number whilst blatting down the motorway.
