I have a 1999 C200 Elegance and have put on some Antera alloys. I have now been told that the threading in the bolts may alter the hole size and I may not be able to put the originals back on.
Can anyone tell me if this is actually true?
Also I have just bought a 1991 300SL 24. Don't like the original alloys much and have been thinking of putting non-mercede's alloys on.
What do you all think? Keep the car original or upgrade the wheels? I know it's my choice, but if it is better to keep it original, I probably will. Just need some advice or comments.

Threads

I spent over 35 years in the threaded fastener game both manufacturing and ditribution.
Some one needs to start talking out of the mouth and not the other end.
If the wheel bolts or nuts are of the correct type (Ideally supplied with the wheesl) all the force is all taken on the two matching tapers so that they wedge together for want of a better description.
Thats why all wheel nuts have a torque figure, so that the tapers match up. If you want all the technical data I can write you pages, but it's boring.
New wheels vastly improve the look of any car.

Excellent. Looks like I will be putting the antera's on the SL. Nice alloy and chrome. Now I will just have to put more coats of wax on the car to catch up with the wheel shine!
Thankyou.

no reason not to put on aftermarket wheels, it's your car you can do what you like with it :)

You need to make sure the wheels have the correct offset, PCD and centre diameter so that they fit properly and don't either affect the steering geometry or foul the bodywork. You should also be very careful with the length of the wheelbolts you use. The standard Merc alloy ones are usually 38mm bolts and only protrude from the rear face of the hub by about 15-20mm - any longer and you can easily do a lot of damage to the brakes - particularly at the rear where the handbrake is inside the hub

As a final note you should notify your insurance company that you have fitted aftermarket alloys or ring them beforehand to ensure it doesn't have an effect on your policy.

Thankyou gentlemen. I will look at the length of the bolts. And yes it surely affected my insurance on my C200! Wow! But, it looks great.
So will take all advice and see what happens!

Hi there,

Just a quick note: Make sure you check the diameter of the non threaded section of wheel bolts as well. I believe they vary from model to model.

Good luck
