Hi all, Just purchased my first Mercedes (C200 Auto Estate on an R plate). I have had the car for a week now with no problems at all. Until today 2/12/07 when after travelling about 30 miles i stopped to visit a shop, on my return i placed the key in the ignition and all seemed fine, until the last turn of the key, the car done its usual check then all i got was one single loud click from the engine bay. I tried all my lights ect and this showed i had plenty off battery power, so i removed the key for a minute or so and tried again but the same thing, from my knowledge of cars i would guess the starter motor, But i thought i would put it to all of you who have more experince with Mercedes cars. Hope someone can help. If not thanks for looking any way.

Hi Darryl and welcome to the forum, this would appear to be the stater motor, when you turn the key to the start position, if the click is coming from the near side rear of engine then it does sound like the starter motor stuck, you could give it a whack with a hammer if you can get to it, its easier to remove the wheel arch liner.

Put a voltmeter or test lamp on the small terminal and see if there is 12volt when you turn the key.

If the headlamps go out when you turn the key, then it is a poor battery connection

Hi ed. I suspect that all is not lost.My experience would lead me to suspect that it is only your battery. You are now coming into the Northern winter and this is commonly when battery failure is at its worst. I would suggest that you try charging your battery overnight to establish wether you can resurrect it. If you keep experiencing the same problem then replace the battery . The fact that your lights were operating would not clear your old battery of being in a low condition. I am sure that the battery condition is responsible for your problems. When charging your battery ensure to not overcharge and make sure that ther are no sparks near the battery. I would ask Malcolm for a second opinion but I dont think mhe is on air at the moment . Regards

Malcolm It is 9.00 am in the morning here . When do you ever sleep?

I go to bed when I am sleepy, re the battery, if the head lamps are turned on while he tries to start, if they go out, then its a bad battery or battery connection.

Your day is just starting in the hot sunshine :D:D

Ref Non Starter

Hi all thanks for your help with my non starter, it turned out to be the main battery lead from the middle of the s/noid under the car to the battery, it was rotten and had fallen away from terminal. Have to say though not a very good design terminal in contact with road spray etc all the time.

Thanks for help

Darryl
