Can anyone tell me what the normal operating temperature is for a 1988 107? Mine keeps heading for 100 degrees + when standing and the fan still hasn`t kicked in!? Local garage say thats usual but it seems too hot to me.
Anyone advise me? Thanks

82-88 is normal on all mercs. Ours sits just at about 85 deg on the gauge, and goes up a bit on a long steep hill, and goes down a bit on long slopes.
It could be a dodgy stat, or a partially blocked rad either internally or externally. Check for flies, bugs and leaves mashed into the rad, and dislodge them gently after soaking in warm soapy water. You could check the stat by taking it out and doing engineering magic on it, but you might as well stick a fresh one in if you are going to take it out. I'd be tempted to put a coooling conditioner like Forte in when you change/top up the coolant.
It could also be a goosed viscous coupling. Look up the carrot test on the search facility and do
It's bound to creep up eventually when standing, and I think that the stat opens fully at 88 deg, but the fan should start cutting in before 100 degrees, if memory serves correctly.
Remind me which model SL you are running.
Here's the fan detail on a post-85 500 http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.as...&L=765.707&CT=M&cat=322&SID=20&SGR=030&SGN=02
The stat is 35 in this diagram on the same model.http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.as...&L=765.707&CT=M&cat=322&SID=20&SGR=015&SGN=01

Yes, the viscous fan should kick in the the high 90s and bring the temp back down again.

Carrot test! lol... not heard that one but i know what you mean.

You can roll up a magazine like a car mag and push that into the fan to see if it stops? if so replace.

Might be worth removing the rad and back flush removing any sludge, but check the fan & thermostat first. good luck
