Im sorry if this is not allowed but this is last resort really...

Got a bmw 850 1992 and the gauges in the instrument cluster dont work, tried changing clusters and it still the same! so it must be internal problem ? wiring loom? ecu? what can it be? all fuses have been checked and are OK. Dash all lights up but temp guage, mileage..ect dont show

Ive not found anyone on the net so far that actually owns a 850 or had owned 1. I was hoping someone with a little experience in BMWs atleast would be on here that can answer the above question?

Thanks

I know nothing about BMW though I have heard of the name, if it was an MB I would check the ignition switch, as the change over from starting to running takes place on this switch

I love the 8 series, but alas, know nothing about it that would help you. If you find a forum, or decide to start one yourself, do let me know. :)

The instrument cluster ..if my memory serves me well.. is controlled from a printed circuit board located in the drivers footwell.. pull off the panel to the side of the footwell and check if there is a circuit board fitted there.. ..it should have a part number, ring a few dealers ..parts dept..and ask them waht items this board controls...quote the part number.. lheadlamps etc and mileage are also on this board..

not sure about the newer ones but theo lder ones had an "SI board" which dealt with the service indicator lights. when there were goosed they tended to give symptoms you describe. check the batteries on the board, they might be shafted. also, can you see any figures on the odometer at all? IE no backlight... or is it completely dead?

i would also check bulbs for the things that arent lighting up..... you may need to take apart the instrument cluster to sort it, it will probably need special tools.

thats all i got! this is based on removing my BMW E30 instrument clusters along with a few others of the same age. the mercedes equivilent is very similarly put together, albeit with a bit more quality ;) there isnt much in this though until you start comparing suspension parts.

oh and you might have to do some sort of BMW secret handshake to reset the display when you have sorted everything [one of those "remove rear brakelight bulb and put it in the ashtray, then turn the ket to the on position 3 times for 5 seconds each" rubbish]
