Changed the front disks on the wife A class on monday. I was horrified to find the brake calipers have LUCAS stamped on them!!!!!!! What the fcuk is mercedes doing using Lucas parts, no wonder the brakes are sh!t.....

Can I get something as an alternative or should I just grind Lucas off the caliper and have anotehr beer.

Actually Malcolm, Lucas bought Girling in 1938. It was a marriage made in Heaven, since they both smoked a lot.

Lucas made things down to a price mainly for Jaguar and BMC
its a two fold thing, had BMC made doors where water did fill up the the motors and switches may have lasted a little longer

Some calipers are made by Lucas on MB's. I am sure the a-class is not alone.

Most of the calipers are ATE.

Generally the Lucas A-Class calipers seem to be the ones that have the most problems. I think mainly due to lack of maintenence as the a-classes seem to get neglected.

I have it on good authority that in 1947 LUCAS lobbied the Government to have Ohm`s Law repealed !! They had to drop the proposal when they found they were meeting too much resistance.

The SLK AMG 55 brakes are Brembo's but you have to rummage around the back of the calipers to find the Brembo cast. Its marked AMG on the front.
