folks, i have just bought a 95 C200 on a m plate, its the auto, when changing up and increasing speed, the gears seems very notchy and is quite noticable when the next gear is selected, unfortunately i have nothing to base this against as this is my first auto, so is this normal? or is there anywhere in nottingham that you can direct me to?
thanks folks

jay.

Hello Jay, number one the oil should be changed in the gearbox and the filter, as the service program has changed. these original sealed for life boxes should now have the oil changed at 60k miles, along with the filter.

The other thing to check is that any vacuam lines are connected.

As Malcolm said a disconnected vac pipe that runs to the gearbox would give a jerky gear change, happened to me twice on two different cars.

Jay, Before you go to any great expense, firstly check the level of the ATF in the gear box-- do it the propper way-- if all is ok then take it out and drive it fairly hard for several miles (20--25) this will ensure that the oiul is fully round the "box" --it might not be if you are only covering short distances-- then see if the box changes any differently, if the problem remains, then follow Television and Mikesmerc's suggestions. I have had this problem on a 190E 2.6 engine and was advised to do this and it cured the problem, although it did return after a while, repeated the proceedure again --cured it.

Hope this helps.

For sure you dont need to drive 20/25 miles and drive the car hard to ensure the oil is all round the box and the torque converter/fluid flywheel. You can do that just by putting the car in gear for a few minutes or drive it round the block OR if you fancy a drive BECAUSE its is a nice day 5/10 miles wont do any harm but it wont do any extra good either other than perhaps ensuring that all of the car including the gearbox oil is fully up to working temperatures.

confused.

Im a little confused. I used to have a C200 1995 - but it didnt have the sealed gear box. It had the earlier. Would it be safe to assume all 1995's have this box?

Like the other posts, i'd also suggest servicing your trans - oil and filter. And also check the adjustment of the Bowden cable - found on the bottom of the throttle linkage. There should be 1-2 mm of slack in it if I remember rightly

Don't be confussed,I know the sealed box did not start till around 98, but the oil did not get changed in the earlier boxes, what I am really saying is do it at 60k no matter what the box.

Our C250D Gear Change has just become fierce so I had a look round and found a loose Vac Tube which is under the plastic panel at the far near side of the engine bay, in this area is the Throttle Quadrants, Cruise Control and a gizmo called the Vacuum Control Valve, its a small cast alloy box with 2 Vac tubes which come from the Gearbox I believe, and a 3rd tube which exits from the top of the box, its this one which is floating loose on our car and which is I suspect responsible for our fierce changes? I think that a Vacuum created by the Gearbox Vac Pump, via the Vac Control Valve knocks off the throttle at the point of gearchangeing therefore easing the changes. You might want to check out these tubes as they are very easy to get to and look at. I ought to point out that so far this is all surmising and guesswork on my part and I would be very happy to be corrected, however if there is someone that could also tell me where this stray tube connects to I would be eternally grateful as despite two good goes I just cannot find a place for it!!
