Hi I am sure one of the experts here can help. I am working on a small mower engine and when the small wire from the coil is connected, you don't get a spark, but as soon as you disconnect it engine will start, but then you cannot stop it. Does this mean that the coil needs replacing?

I've seen mower engines where there was a strip of metal adjacent to the spark plug with a bit of rubber tubing over the end, the idea being that to stop the engine you'd push the metal onto the spark plug terminal, this shorting it out.
Could this wire serve a similar purpose, maybe by being intended to be connected via a switch?
I think basic mower engines derive the spark from a magneto, so are self powering, the electrical energy being generated by the movement of a magnet around the coil.

Hi yes this wire replaces the strip of metal. There is no switch on it, but maybe a safety switch. I will have to disable them all and see if the works.
