Hi Folks,

I just bought a 2019 E400D Coupe and I need to change the plates to my personalised number. The plates are held in a plastic frame with no obvious way to release them, presumably for security reasons. Is this a DIY job, or does it need main dealer assistance, please?

They usually have a small area on a couple of edges that allows a small screwdriver to be inserted to unclip, just a case of finding it and being firm to release everything

Don't know much about the screws but when you put your new plates on use 3M double sided tape. You will have to build up the levels on the rear plates but they do look so much nicer. These are mine :-

There is a clip arounf the frame wheich will release with a screw driver and the frame folds down. the frame is screwed into the bodywok, bumber or rear door. The plate will just pull out. Install is reverse obviously.
Be careful with the clips in the cold weather as they could snap which would mean you need to get new frame(s).

ps if your inclined to use a meain dealer for these type of things, have your wallet open very wide.

Thanks for that. I looked at this and the E53 saloon, but the AMG was too harsh, even on 'comfort' settings, and only slightly quicker in real terms (typical AMG!). Great straight six engines in both cars, though! And in white with Night Pack and the 20 inch black wheels, it's a looker! Coming from a 2015 Audi S7.

Welcome- as others have said already the plate holders are hinged or clipped sometimes it doesn't look obvious.
Hopefully your personal plates don't have line frames on them Like AJD above), those look really horrible in the frames. The frames themselves are easily removed if necessary as they are screwed on like the plates themselves can be.

Hello and welcome
Thanks for that. I did some poking around with a thin bladed table knife, discovered a couple of click fasteners on the base strip, two minutes and the new plates were in. thanks guys the forum came through!
