Guys,

Just suppose your number plate fitter got some of the letters or numbers wrong when he put your rear plate on (purely by mistake).

Now, the situation used to be that you could only get a Max £20 fine and an order to put it right.........

With so many wallet-emptying Police devices relying on photographing your number plate, I would imagine they would increase this fine, or even make it endorsable.................anyone know the law on this one?

Dont even think about it matey!

All the makers of number plates are now listed with DVLA, anyone else who supplies you with one is breaking the law. My dads garage has the licence and are supposed to look at the V5 to get the number.

I dont know exactly how much bending you could do, but im sure a couple of the representatives of the met on this forum could help??

Got the following text from the DVLA web site:

"The law states that,

You must not alter, rearrange or misrepresent the letters or numbers
Characters must not be moved from one group to the other (e.g. A242 ABC must not be displayed as A242A BC).

Offences may result in any or all of the following:

A fine of up to £1,000
The registration mark may be WITHDRAWN
The vehicle may FAIL the MOT test

Full details of the requirements are included in The Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001"

Given the number of non-conformant number plates going around, it doesn't appear as though the police are catching people, the reg. marks are being withdrawn or that MOT stations are failing cars. But the law's pretty clear if you want to risk it.

I've had 'dodgy' number plates for years and years, mostly get a warning, maximum fine ever received £30.

Can buy any number plate you wish (for off road use) perfectly legally everywhere.

Vehicle doesnt even need a number plate for an MOT. (Funny that the DVLA dont know that)

Moral....dont believe all that you read.

I must say however that a friends rear number plate had the letter F changed to the letter E by someone as a joke using some black tape. Took about six months before he noticed....may have saved him a few tickets over that time - who knows.
