I will be going to my local DVLA office later today to do this. I know that you cant wait like you used to for a plate swop but does anyone know what happens with a retention? Any info would be of use. Thanks.

Take your Log book and MOT to the DVLA,fill out the retention form, hand over to person behind the counter pay the retention fee.

You will then get sent a new tax disc ,MOT etc normally within a week.

You can then change plates to the original number which will be sent within the other info.

Reverse steps when you decide to put it on your new car, just take same docs to DVLC fill in the appropiate form ,no fee to pay, they normally change everything while you wait.

you do not have to wait for your new log book, the green slip will suffice, hope this helps

Everything that you need to know is set out clearly and simply on the DVLA site. I have recently completed the procedure - it takes about 2-3 weeks for DVLA to complete it.

w44nty and Benzman, Great information thanks, very accurate. I had already downloaded the form but I could not work out what happened next so I used the 0300 number and spoke to a man who knew the system inside out as telephone advisors should do.

So I will post this next bit as it might help someone in the future.

What happens is you download the form from the DVLA Website, fill in the relevent sections write a cheque for £105.00 (Current cost) made out to the DVLA Swansea put required details on reverse of cheque. Present yourself at your local DVLA office, someone will check your paperwork, then hand you an envelope to write your name and address on. Hand the whole lot back to the assistant and it goes into the back office for processing. When your paperwork is processed it is streamed live to DVLA Swansea, 4 days later I received my Tax Disc and MOT and the V5 comes from Swansea. In theory you could have the whole job completed in the same day, that's the theory. So I'm just waiting for my V5 and away we go.
