Looking to put nice small personnel number plate on front of new slk when I get it,but was wondering if there are holes predrilled on the front already? And if so will these cause me a problem?

Is it easy to stick the plates on using the double sided tape that comes with number plates as it looks as though the front bumber will kind of bend the plates?

Any experiences welcome.;)

Cheers

Hi,

A lot of new Mercedes these days have their number plates affixed with a black frame which does not require the number plate to be drilled at all.

The frame unclips by inserting a small allen key into the slot on the left and right edge, and 'wiggling' it around whilst gently pulling the edge away from the plate.

You shouldn't need to use any sticky tape at all.

Check the regulations. Number plates have very strict rules governing every aspect of their size and shape. The police are getting stricter with plates since there are more private ones about these days. Also, plate makers are licenced these days so are less eager to make up illegal formats.

I had 'cut off' plates once, thought it would look good with my 5 character number. After a couple of weeks I looked at it and thought they just looked 'chavvy' and went back to standard ones. A small number on a standard sized plate on a decent car can look quite classy.

This is true. However, the law about spacing of characters differs if the plate has a single 1 digit in it. The spacing allowed is (I think) 11mm between the 1 and the characters whereas if the digit is a 2 or anything else, the distance is 33mm. I'll check.......

I've often wondered why newer, more expensive merc's than mine have drilled plates mounted using screws - no answer has yet presented itself!!
On mine - there is the black frame with clippy edges, which looks much nicer than screw holes in the middle of the plate - i suppose the frame could be changed if required???

With curved front bumpers the 4 screws hold the plate in place better, as the plate has to be curved to match the bumper. Another is that with differing plate regulations around 4 screw holes match more possibilities rather than frames which are country specific. Cost saving I expect.

I agree completely, My Volvo number is short and always looks nice on the full size plate, Classy is a good word, mine stands out from the croud.

They do not work, waste of money, the Danish 3D plastic cover does not work very well either, seeing some other threads on this forum, you may find that you tend to drive your MB slower than your previous car, that being the case you will not need anything.

I agree with Malcolm that the sprays wouldnt work, worst still I suspect that using them is at least a theoretical offence as you are trying to avoid getting caught.

Can only speak for the fixing of plates on 170 SLK's. I think that the four screws looks poor, on the back of our cars the plate has been held on a carrier as others have described and on the front using double sided tape strips. No screw holes and a well made plate look good. A personalised plate on a well maintanined car looks classy to me and does away with the need to keep up with the neighbours in the "year indicator" stakes.

Mark.

Whilst people buy snake oil there will always be snake oil salesmen. If you want some independant advice pls check out ukspeedtraps.co.uk they have tested all the options. The only guaranted way to not get done for speeding is not to have a car

w.r.t to the frames for number plates. When i recently swapped the plates over on my car, i got the plates made up from the dealers. I said, Have you got any of those frames for the number plates, he chucked me a set in for free-i nearly collapsed (something free form the dealers)
So yes you can get them from the dealers and they are very easy to attach, use the number plate screws to attach the frame, the frames unclip at the sides and the top and swing out, so you pop the plate in, you then just clip the frame back together....it will make sense when and if you get the frames.

font or back (or both) ? I have an 03 C-class and the front plate is fine but the back plate has 4 screws with no caps so it looks a bit naff. I tried buying yellow caps from Halfrauds but they were too small (the heads on Merc srews stick out too far).

Was it a merc dealer you got them from or are they generally available?

yes it was from a merc dealer. and for both

The surrounds screw in place very neatly and the plates simply slide in. If you have already drilled your plates you may want to get some new ones made up as the holes may look messy. this is the chance to ask them to chuck in the surrounds!!
