Hi all,
I started my e320 cdi tip today & selected drive which was a bit jerky.
I then drove off but it wouldn't change to second gear.
I tried turning off & turning off in drive but still the same problem.
When I select drive or reverse it bangs into gear.
Also it won't go into reverse from drive unless I take my foot off the brake.
Any help galdy received again :D

The brake light switch is one thing,,and worth a try at £10 but no guarantee of a fix

On some cars the throttle cuts if a foot is on the footbrake, is the fluid level OK

sounds like the one of the speed sensors in the box has failed, hence the bang into gear!!

Hi,
Thanks very much for your help, so could this be the problem for it not coming out of first gear and where abouts is the switch situated?
Thanks again

I think that colechelle is nearer the mark than me on this, the bang being the giveaway

I hate to worry you, but get it checked.
The only warning that my gearbox gave before it failed was a very harse banging into gear from nuetral to drive.

Hi again,
spoke to mb dealer they said it sounds like the gear selector as the selector indicator on the dash stays in park irrespective of where the gear lever is.
If its a speed sensor would that still make it jerk into gear at standstill & lock out reverse while my foot is on the brake?
I think its gonna be a few pennies whatever:(
Cheers guys.

OK I understand the bang now,, you select D and nothing happens as contact has not been made,,contact is made and bang as the engine is revving, that fits.

Whoops no but nearly right lol.
I start the car put my foot on the barke then select D & it engages but with a jerk,
then pull away but it stays in 1st.....i then pull up & it will not go back into P unless I take my foot off the brake.
The dash is saying P whatever I do.
I can repeat this over but still the same results.
Thanks.

no point Malc, undo the "C" clip, couple of plugs and refit, nothing is changed, the adjustment is made on the selector rod, but seeing as the ESM will be the same theres no need for adjustment!!, kind offer though!!!!
