OBD reader

Recently I have had to take my car to the garage relating to warning lights on the dash which have turned out to be a simple fix problems like sensors . I have realised that half the cost is detecting these problems via a OBD code reader and clearing the faults. Is it cost effective to buy a reasonably priced OBD myself and can anyone suggest a model that will detect and also clear these codes once the problem is fixed. Ideally one that works with most makes BMW and Toyota for example. Any feedback would be great.
