Your car has no ODB2 on it, a simple blink code reader should work

Then what is the purpose of the adaptor on eBay?

I know about the blink tester; I've built and used one before. I was just curious if it would be possible to extract more data from the ECU.

It can only extract the same data as a 124 does not have much more on this 38 pin socket, but for all it cost it could be useful for doing some cars up to 2000 that do not have the 16 pin one

I read somewhere that the late 2.8/3.2 M104 engines can give data such as Lambda, coolant temperature, current gear selected (on autos), amount of fuel injected, battery voltage, engine RPM, throttle position etc.

This may well be enough to use a Scangauge to give an instant MPG figure.

Late W124s in America had a proper OBD port. From 1994 the EPA mandated ODB in the USA. AFAIK we never had that requirement in Europe

So American literature (E-Class Owners Bible, etc) may refer to OBD data that's not available on European models

But they all use the same ECU; so surely with the right connector the same data can be accessed.

The 124 finished in 1995 with the odd ones coming through during 1996

This seems to prove my point:

http://www.ecutools.com/shop/shop.php?action=full&id=9

Description

Converts your standard OBD2 16 pin lead to the 38 pin plug for older Mercedes Benz models (normally before 2001, check your vehicle to ensure)
The 38 pin diagnostic socket is normally found under the bonnet.

This adaptor works with all our universal OBD2 systems in our shop as well as the Mercedes Benz HandHeld Code Readers

I expect what you'll find is the square connector by the brake servo. That's not OBD, AFAIK

No it isn't. That is the 16 pin diagnostic terminal which is used with a blink tester. Don't Bull**** me.

I'm talking about the 38-pin micro-connector that is on the other bulkhead by the battery, which my W124 does indeed have.

Mine definitely has it; that's one of the main reasons I bought the car. Just have to wait for the adaptor cable to arrive now.

This thread should now be closed; the answer has been established and any further posts will just cause further argument.

Are there FCRs that can read from the 16 pin (X11/4) type connector ?
