Hi there,

I had the brake discs and pads replaced on my 1999 E300 Turbo-D a few months back. A few weeks after they were replaced I thought I occasionaly heard this funny clicking/tapping noise when reversing but thought nothing of it. Anyway, the other day I was reversing in an underground carpark with the window open and I was able to hear the noise properly. It only happens when u go from driving forward, apply the brakes, change gear and then reverse (or vice-versa) and sounds to be like the front pads clicking against the caliper. It's quite loud and the actual sound is like a tap or click and sometimes I could hear it happening on the left then the right a fraction of a second apart - definately coming from the brakes. I moved forward and back several times and it always does it.

My question is....is this something to worry about and if so what can I do to fix it?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Greetings,
Michael

If it's a single click or clunk each time the wheel changes direction, it sounds like the pads shifting slightly up or down as the brakes bind on. I had the same noise when the mechanic fitted non MB pads to my C. Nothing to worry about though, it's just they don't fit quite as well as the originals and shift slightly in their seats as disk changes direction.

Hi
Sounds like it could be the front rubber propshaft coupling.Would needto get it up in the air and check it out.

Quick check....

No front propshaft, rear wheel drive, but I agree with possible movement of pads but i had an experience a long time back.....caliper bolts not fully torqued up after raplacing pads and discs....was not a Merc but the caliper was moving slightly. I would check it out.

On a simpler note though I wonder do the drop links need replacing, they make a noise a bit like that when they go, life span is short but they are cheap to replace. They are a known weak point.

Sorry about that RJR 28/12, I misread it and thought you were referring to front wheels. I agree about checking that rubber shock absorber, I am sure it wears and i remeber from having motor bikes with rubber shock absorbers inside the rear wheel sprocket hub housing-when the shock absorber wore or deteriorated you got clunks in the transmission, also became prone to snatching.
