Can anyone tell me how to change the display light bulbs for the odometer?
There seem to be one on each side of display and one has gone off.
Also type of bulb would be useful, or is it best to take the car to a garage?
Car is year 2000 E320 Cdi Estate

See this for cluster removal (just stop at the strip down bit!)

I'd remove it partially (leave connected), then drive it to the dealer, take the key out (so as not to upset the SRS) and remove the cluster entirely.
Then take the cluster into the parts dept with you. When I asked for a 'set of bulbs' they said there were several different types so couldn't say what they were until they were out.. Seems odd but still.
Change them all at the same time as a) they will all start to go now and b) one bright one looks odd when the rest are faded.

Thanks for that
While I'm about it, the temperature display has a couple of missing segments, and the clock/gear selection readout does not work at all. Is one or both of these likely to be just the connectors that apparently require rubber bungs to make them connect properly? Which connectors are the faulty ones? Is there a proper MB fix? Rgds TG

Yes that's the fault. No there isn't an official MB fix - they just suggest a new cluster at £500+. You can have a go with the rubber shims - others have had success with this. The cables are obvious once you get it apart. Otherwise speedofixer or BBA-reman can fix them for around £200.

Pixels Problem

Hi,

I've had the same pixel problem for a year or so on E320 CDI and eventually got fed up with it, today I took the plunge to repair it using the 'rubber packing' method.

I'm glad to say it worked at the second attempt, the first time there wasn't enough packing so I put a bigger piece in and 'hey presto'.

The whole job took about 2 hours, dismantling the cluster is fairly logical once you get it out of the car.

The only problem I had was getting the needles in the right places and I'm still not sure they are, any recommendations would be appreciated.

Would recommend trying this first before sending the pod away.
