this may or may not be a good idea BUT as we often seem to have the subject come up as to whether or not to buy from dealers or from other sources byy buying OEM parts, I wondered if it would be an idea if we could have a list of who makes what for MB, like radiators are made by Behr and by Valeo and so on.

Just a thought. add to it if you feel its a good idea

A reasonable suggestion but who is to say, categorically, who does and who doesn't?

You'll get many different opinions.

Buy from MB and you get "OEM" and warranty.

fair point, but my thinking behind the idea was for owners of older cars who perhaps dont always have the budget for dealer supplied parts. its rather like saying that my car, for example, was originally supplied with goodyear tyres, but i cant get them from anywhere but the dealer or they will be possibly of a lesser quality

I appreciate what you say but firstly MB are not always more expensive. Get dealer prices first then check out alternatives. Aftermarket parts will almost always be suitable alternatives but for how long?

Sadly Pete while there is a war going on here and little clicks to knock anything where possible you will never get a fair answer.

Its a shame as I can go on Benzworld or MB world and talk discuss most of these things in a faír and constructive way.

There are so many things one could add to the list, but every time one tries the same members do their best to squash the subject.

Such a shame as we could here once

The only "war" apparently seems to be if someone was to disagree with what you say.

Accept others have a different view to you. Different necessarily not wrong, better, or correct, just different!

I think we all know to shop around, but ive recently been pricing intercoolers. over £300 TRADE from MB yet some on ebay are less than HALF that price. now if theyre made by the same company, it would make sense to a budget orientated person to buy from the cheaper source! likewise if MB were cheaper, buy from MB

Aftermarket parts will almost always be suitable alternatives but for how long?

what are you referring to here? how long will aftermarket be suitable or how long will aftermarket products exist?

but are pattern parts that are made by OEM manufacturers made to the same spec?
HP beans are made by Heinz, but they're not made to the same spec as Heinz Beanz ;);)

Pete, I'm not saying you shouldn't buy aftermarket, just be careful. There are many bargains to be had by buying superseded parts. Doesn't mean they are inferior. Just be careful. ...

true but then again, you also know you arent buying the spec of tesco value beans, you are buying heinz beans but in a different 'compound' (in this case the sauce recipe)

fair point, and well made, hence my original suggestion of trying to find out what companies make which parts for MB, so that we might find a few 'hidden gems' as we search for items we need

If we're could do that, with confidence, great but how do we get unequivocal information as to who is OEM?

Again Pete so many arguments on this, there are many parts made better than the originals, but all get shot down before any discussion as to why can take place.
The last thing i bought was engine mounts from Germany, just so much better than the OE versions and everyone in the USA raves about them, on here they get the cold shoulder.

Older Citroen Now :-(
ECP do excellent Textar discs / pads which I intend to use next time I need them on the E class.
MB burnt there boats with me by not replacing/refunding the front discs when they warped after only 2 months. (Mmm a superior product indeed).
There reasoning was "Because they hadn't fitted them"..
Car accessory shops have no such problem honouring guarantees even though the lowly customer has done the fitting !

The Textar discs have been on my C class for 24,000 miles with no warping, squealing, rattling or any other malfunction..

You are a brave man Simon, saying that here :D:D I know what you say to be so true. I used to recommend EBC and the members were happy as shown here http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showpost.php?p=580292&postcount=63
